When FTB is out of beta I plan to create a multi-storey building with each level having a function that differs from the rest (storage, farming, etc). The goal is to have a functional structure which houses most of the things I would like without it looking like a cobweb of wires, pipes and cables.

Due to the mass of lord-knows-what which is needed to keep components working I would like the walls, ceilings and floors to be several blocks thick so everything ugly can be hidden away. But now comes the problem of how I am going to traverse different areas quickly without it looking horrible. Stairs look nice but are too slow because of how thick the levels are. Vanilla minecarts require a dizzying vortex of track to move fast enough and that's a turn-off. Piston elevators seemed like a good idea until I realised how frustrating the wiring will be for a version with multiple options. So... That leaves the mods! Portal and MystCraft might be able to help but I do not know enough about them just yet and I have no idea what the other ones can offer me.

Any suggestions of mods which could help and the specific things in those mods? I don't mind if it's a teleport-type travel or a physical movement, as long as it's fairly quick and it doesn't look horrible I will be happy!

Elevator track from steve's carts. I'm not sure if it's possible to make it send you to different levels though. But I'm going to find out soon :).

IC^2 Teleporters. Those use a lot of energy though. Making them re-link to different floors will be a bit of a bother w/o RP as well.

IC^2 Magnetizer. Similar to a simple ladder, once again, getting off at different levels might be a problem. You also need metal shoes for this to work.

Then there's the jetpack. Would leave you stranded if you got out of energy though.

Then there's portals from the portal gun. Once again, relinking would be so much easier with remote redstone. Hm. This gave me an idea, you could use computer craft computers, those can send out a redstone pulse, might be worth a try. Would works with teleporters as well. (Cost a lot of energy, but they're less buggy)

Aeiral faceplates from portal mod.

they are awesome (but very loud).

I suggest removing their sound.

Make a link editor from mystcraft, and make a bunch of intra-linking link books to your different floors. its two clicks, and X books per floor, where X = number of floors - 1 but its the fastest i can name.

Vanilla cart elevator? Or even a piston elevator. With red power it isn't hard to build, I had one in my 1.2.5 world and it worked greatly with 8 floors.

Dunno if it happens to everyone, but after linking a few times (maybe only happens inter-age) the game starts getting weird 1-second-apart lagspikes that grow for each linking i do... after switching ages a few times i have to close minecraft and reopen.

Is it normal?

Optifine installed? I had the same issue, uninstalled optifine and everything runs smoothly now, even after intense age travelling.

Aerial Faith Plates can be placed on walls and ceilings. Except, the ones placed on the ceiling in Beta A can trap you.

2 teleporters per floor. 1 up, 1 down. No need to resync them.

On the bottom floor you could still have 2 and just link the second straight to the top floor, or to your most commonly used floor.

Alternatively, you could have a larger TP room with a TP to every floor.

Maybe Thaumcraft levitors, or whatever they're called?
Ah, the Arcane Levitators. They probably won't be much good unless you're playing MW or Ultimate, but if you are, the whole "negate falling damage while underneath" thing allows you to use them to get down as well as up. I haven't made any yet (need a chicken farm for Aer), but I have a plan to make a levitator system for my base. It involves stairs. And a stable Mystcraft age.

Jetpack is quite good option. Very fast. I lived in one-chunk tower for some time, using only jetpack for moving from floor to floor. Non friendly for pedestrian visitors, though.

In my base I have an automatic lift set up with the elevator tracks the embark track and disembark track, it look like this http://imgur.com/lBHOU. theres 2 loops running constantly, you just stand next the the embark track http://imgur.com/tUtnh and it'll whisk you away up (or down) and drop you off at the next floor. Works a treat
