I'm getting seriously annoyed with trying to make Thaumium. I've researched magical metallurgy I dont know what I'm missing. According to everything I've read, netherwart should be fine for the praecantatio so I put four in the crucible and an iron ingot, get nothing.

Help?

You have to "smelt" the netherwart (with some coal for fuel) in an Alchemical Furnace with two Arcane Alembics stacked on top of it (you can stack up to 5 Alembics if necessary). Since Nether Wart only contains two aspects (Praecantatio and Herba), you only need two Alembics. Start by putting the Netherwart in with the coal, then apply a Label to each Alembic (so they won't switch places all the time). Place one Essentia Tubing on each Alembic and attach a glass jar to the end of the tubing. You will need one glass jar for the Praecantatio and I prefer to use a Void Glass Jar for the Herba (since I never use Herba). When the jars begin to fill up, put a label on those as well.

Now you can make Glass Phials and right click the Praecantatio Glass Jar to fill the Phial. It will now contain "8" of the Prae essence, so if Thamium reqires 4 essence, then each Phial will make 2 Thaumium ingots. So just throw the Phial into the Crucible, and then throw 2 iron ingots in, one after the other. You should receive 2 Thaumium ingots! Hope that help you understand the process. Later on, you can automate the Crucible process so you don't have keep using Phials and doing it by hand (I think it's called the Thaumatorium, just keep researching and you'll get to it).

Basically, you will want to make Glass Jars for all of the common Essences (such as Ignis, Terra, Ordo, Praecantatio, etc.) and make Void Glass Jars for all the "oddball" Essences (such as Herba when you are breaking down some Nether Wart). Make a place to store all your Glass Jars, later on you can use Golems to keep all your jars filled, etc.

Throwing Nether Wart into the Crucible should break it down into Praecantatio and Herba. If you don't add the Iron Ingot immediately, the complex essentia will begin to break down into the aspects that make up the originals. Wearing your Goggles of Revealing (possibly looking at the Crucible through a Thaumometer) will show you the aspects contained within. Note that if one of the needed aspects breaks down before you add the catalyst, you will need to add more before the transmutation will occur.

Personally, I've never been a fan of Crucible crafting. In fact, any mechanic that requires me to drop items from my inventory into a small target rubs me the wrong way (likely due partially to server play with people who constantly use item magnets and/or item vacuums). Therefore, I've always rushed the automated Crucible crafting (Thaumotorium? I forget what its called). This allows you to pipe Essentia in, add up to a stack of catalysts, choose your output (if multiple recipies exist for that catalyst), and autocraft away. Much more reliable, and you get less mess from leftover aspects deteriorating in your Crucible.

Back on your original message, make sure you have the right amount of desired aspect in the Crucible, then add the catalyst. If it isn't working, research automated alchemy. I highly recommend it regardless, as you'll likely be doing a bunch of alchemy if you're interested in Thaumcraft.

Thanks Inaeo, I guess I forgot there's a more basic way to make Thaumium ingots. But I agree that any mechanic requiring the player to toss items is not ideal. Botania Agglomeration Plate uses a similar mechanic and I complain every time about it. :)

I think you can right-click the Crucible, however, with the item in your hand and it will go in... so you do not have to press Q and throw the item in like you have to do in Botania... try that out anyways, and see if it works.

The reason I always avoid putting items into the Crucible directly, such as Nether Wart, is because the Essence that doesn't get used up (meaning the Herba in this case) gets released into the environment. If you're making multiple ingots via the Crucible, you will eventually get that nasty purple liquid in your base (Taint) and it kinda scares me. So I always research the Alchemical Furnace, Arcane Alembic and the Thaumatorium right away and skip the manual Crucible stuff. That way, you never have "extra" or "leftover" Essences, and thus you never get any Taint in your base.

I found out in the end that air shards have paecntatio so I used those instead. Instant Thaumium. Will probably keep up with it though as I like a challenge! Thanks for the replies! :)

Try making a Crystalizer setup. This way you only have to distil exactly what you need. You can even do some interesting setups with AE in this matter.

I believe the item grate that lets you automate the Infernal Furnace works on the Crucible as well. I tend to rush the Alchemical Construct. (And the first thaumcraft research is done either far, far away, or in a magical forest if I can lay hands on one.

I'm enjoying the new mana bean breeding mechanic. I'll breed all the aspects, but I'll only automate the useful ones. They do still take time to mature, so better for small batch crafting and not for ongoing automated processes. This is especially useful for the hard to get aspects, like auram and vitium.

Netherwart doesn't have precantatio if you use forbidden magic. So no wonder its not working.
Netherwart has Infernus and herba in forbidden magic.
If you don't mind the exess Arbor use greatwood logs.

To be frank I wouldn't bother with crucible crafting at all. I always rush for an alchemical construct. I find the excess flux and the unreliable nature of item dropping to make crusible crafting an undesirable option.
