I haven't seen a single person talking about this, or showing it in a video, but the Arcane Bore from Thaumcraft is amazingly awesome. It is a two-block recipe (the base and the bore head) and can mine an 11x11x50 area (maybe more) in about five minutes. It mines with whatever enchantments you have, including Fortune III or Silk Touch I ! The best part about it is, it does not cost any EU or MJ. Any negative side-effects to the Aura can be completely mitigated. Coolest thing I've seen so far so I just had to share it:

How?
When I saw this used on DW20, it completely drained all the vis. (Sorry if this is explained in the video, but I don't have half an hour to spare.)

You can use cyrstals to create more vis.

The real down side is flux but as many will point out just box in your node and even that is a miner issue.

Hehe... Miner...

I'll probably not use the bore myself, since it does seem as though it will hamper the vis quite a bit. Those crystals are a little pricy...

Also, if you DO care about the local environment you should cultivate large pure node near your workshop. You do this by repeatedly growing silverwood trees close to one another until their node side exceeds the next closest natural node, then use basic aura manipulation to tug the other node nearby to cause them to merge.

This helps enormously with flux, but it is not a small project.

Generating flux doesn't seem to be stoppable, but using Crystal Clusters, from what I understand, you can significantly reduce the rate at which the bore eats up vis energy. This should also help keep the tools from breaking while they are in the bore. I don't know too much about TC3, but I don't think that the increase in flux can be prevented if you are generating or consuming Vis. For an AFK quarry system run by turtles, spawning wisps or firebats does not really matter that much, since there are no players there to have to deal with them, and even if you did have to drop by they are not difficult.

You could have this turtle-controlled with chunk loaders pumping to enderchests, it would be an awesome setup imho.

I have also successfully tested the bore on frames, and it works well. Since you can aim the bore in all six directions, you could even make a surface-based mobile bore quarry, if a tunnel bore is too boring (haha puns).

Someday I will make a UFO with a death ray and use it to demolish someone's fortress...someday.

I was only suggesting that you could design something to face any direction, not that a design could be switched mid-operation.

Actually, I do see a logical point to this. It'd be really good to have it on a frameship, and take it around the twilight forest, demolishing the hollow hills!

Same, but for the extra brainy zombies- trying to fill a soulshard (hopefully brains are not classed as rare drops).

They are, I'm told. Zombie brains are the new ender pearls. And since they let you make immovable objects, it is good they remain rare.

Yeah I've been wondering how non-whitelist servers were handling the thaumcraft warded blocks that can't be destroyed, I'd think they wouldnt be able to use the mod at all due to griefing, don't know.
