Ok!

So I have been playing with TC4 and have started with the infusion alter, and seem to have a bit of a runaway situation that I can not figure out how to stop.

I was originally trying to make thaumium caps. I had all the needed components, it ate all essentia that it needed, and then it just kept going. Last I looked at the matrix it was up to about 500 of each needed and growing.

Is there any way to stop it?

Quick question: did you have 500 of each essentia sitting about or is it appearing to generate them out of thin air. If you did not have them consider save/quit and reload, you might just have a derp in connection.

The matrix shows the essence amount that it requires, not the amount that it has. If for some reason it doesn't finish correctly, the essence count will begin climbing from 0 until (I'm assuming) it gets cancelled.

Take the central item off the altar.

That was one of the first things I tried, but for some reason it did not work.
I eventually destroyed the central pillar and that stopped the infusion. It was fun watching it go crazy though, taint started spreading across my base, explosions everywhere, lightning zapping me when I tried to watch it.

Thats odd, ah well rampant abuse by a runaway infusion could be fun to watch...hmmm might set one up in a test world just to see how bad it can get :)

I'd say what happened was an item popped off one of the pillars on the edge and you didn't notice. I've done the same and the outcome is identical (although I think I destroyed the runic matrix).

Funnily enough I was also trying to craft the thaumium caps.

The "fix" to this is just replace items when they fall off. I did and ended up getting my caps crafted and eventually my silverwood wand.

Heh. Only a few hundred blocks away I have a taint biome that I have been trying to expand. If I can figure out how to get the runaway to happen again I might let it do its thing over there.

I seem to be having issues in general with clicking and highlighting in thaumcraft, it is possible that it interacts with morph oddly. Even when the infusion happens correctly I seem to be having trouble getting things off the alter.

My first few Infusion attempts, I had runaway reactions. Tons of taint and I took tons of damage. It eventually played itself out.

I learned the key to preventing runaway Infusions is to *always* have more than what you need of everything, including the essentia. My Infusion Altar now is lined by labeled void jars, 1 for each aspect, and each jar has 64 essentia. I never run out of essentia and have a runaway reaction unless I forget to refill a certain aspect ;-)

The level below my Infusion Altar has five(5) essence furnaces-thingies, each with 5 essence pot-thingies, all hooked up the essentia tubes leading up to my Infusion Altar. The ones on the end have hoppers with a chest so I can toss in a bunch of unstackable items like hoes (for the sickle-symbol essence) and axes (for the blue tool essence, Instrumentum). I make sure to refill all my essentia void jars before and after each big Infusion session.

well, as a bit of follow up, I did indeed try a runaway infusion (with a chunkloader) right on the edge of a taint biome with a node nearby. I have to say, I was pretty disappointed with the results. Even the purple 'your infusion is messing up' blocks eventually faded away, even though the numbers kept climbing.

I was hoping it would at least corrupt the nearby node or expand the taint, but no luck. I guess I need to find a more effective way to destroy the environment....

Yeah, if you are morphed, especially into a smaller mob like a bat, targeting blocks gets all messed up.

I believe that in order for lots of flux to generate a tainted biome, you need to turn it on in the config.
