I'll be starting up a world with this and a few others tomorrow. I'm quite excited to mess around with it, especially around hobbits...

So how do you get rid of existing taint in the world in this version of Thaumcraft? I watched the 3 direwolf videos and while he showed off a taint biome, he didn't say anything about how to make it go away.

I think there are nodes to combat the taint.. I suppose the only reeeal way to kill a taint biome is to quarry it out or something...

So, quarring a forest biome gets rid of that? Just like in Thaumcraft 2, taint is not that easily rid off. Move a silverwood node to the taint after removing the taint node.

Quarrying out a taint biome is not easy. You need to move quick, and make sure the quarry can do the same. Also squash those straggling blocks as quickly as possible. Also There was underground taint aswell if I recall. I hated taint with a passion. So it's probably more of my extremist method of dealing with it. Get id of all the blocks it can spread to... And all the blocks that could spread it.

I haven't played with thaumcraft 4 however, Just looking into it. I wasn't aware that the silverwoods grew nodes like the prior version... I think i'm just gunna cave and try it.

I'm making the guide for this as some might know and so far the mod's looking pretty goshdarn awesome in comparison to the last.
Azanor has outdone himself.

Back in Thaumcraft 2, taint was difficult to kill via destruction of blocks because it came from the Aura itself. No matter how many blocks you destroyed, if the taint rating in that chunk was high enough, it would simply infect more.

Now that Aura as such no longer exists in newer TC versions, it may be possible to combat taint by destroying it. But that all depends on what actually causes it to spawn in the first place.

TBH, I'm not keen on the new research system. It's more of a "grind" then the previous version, which people found tedious after their 1st-2nd run through. I can't really see how that move the runes around mini game is in any way "fun".
I do like though that research is not a strict tree, you can research direct into the items you are after. No more having to research a ton of stuff just to get my first golem.

I also remember seeing on the MC forums that Azanor wanted to reduce the number of aspects, and now suddenly, we have a ton more then before.

I'm also not that keen on having to babysit the new infusion altar (as impressive as it is) due to the chance of items being destroyed or falling off the pedestals.

I do like that taint is back, I just love having a world eating purple "goo" around the place, although in TC2 it was easy to get out of control.

I always hated to restart a new world, and having to do the research all over again, because there's alot of research, so it always meant you'd be busy doing the same research all over again for a good hour or two atleast. and yea, I hoped Azanor would keep the aspects to a low number to make it a bit easier, but seems he completely forgot about that

and I hope Azanor changes it so items only pop off the altar, and not get destroyed, and adds a golem that can automatically pick up the item, and put it back on the altar.

as for taint, it's nice it's back, but dear god I hope it won't happen that the taint kills my whole base, again...

I'm not doing TC4 stuff just yet, but there is natural taint and it be a spreading ... creeping ... creeping me out.

Does it spread an unlimited distance or does it eventually stop spreading once far enough from it's origination? I don't mind moving my temporary base to get it out of my chunk loaded area if need be for now.

I disagree, I think the minigame's a nice touch, especially in contrast to TC3 where you basically dump stuff to win which always bothered me. I also like how you don't have to fuck around getting awkward stuff like Tempus or Sonus from TC3 anymore by making noteblocks, jukeboxes and clocks.
Agreed, it might be repeatative but honestly if it wasn't people would just complain it's too easy and when you think about it it's still easy once you know what you're doing and you practice a fair bit. I mean I was new to research and it took me like 20 minutes to figure it out and a a couple hours to figure out a few things. Doing it again from scratch wouldn't take as long.
What takes long is researching the aspects, really and even then once you know the combinations it's super easy.

I refer you to my guide if you want the combinations.

You got to draw the line somewhere between what you prefer, ease or tedium. You can't have both.

I think the new research mechanism is awesome, not being forced just to "dump" items in research, but actually researching stuff gives you knowledge.
I really like the way he have thought around this.
But i have yet to play it though :p

I really like something which Golrith pointed out. I love how the research is categorized now and branched into five schools of thaumaturgy, meaning you don't have to siphon through all the crap to get to the research you want. I hope when it comes to addons like Magic Bees they put it in their own categories too.

If anyone REALLY REALLY hates taint biomes... There is a config to completely negate taint biomes. So I suppose you can technically make it act like prior thaumcraft where it didn't change the land, but had those nasty effects.

# The chance per chunk (1 in n) of a Taint biome spawning during world gen. Setting it to 0 prevents the spawning of Taint biomes.
I:biome_taint_chance=2000

I don't mind taint, I just don't want to be near taint. I figure if it spawns naturally - fine. It spreads that's okay too. But if it spreads infinitely without the player using any TC stuff, then the solution becomes - move away from it so it's not chunk loaded.

So, does it spread naturally forever or does it have a central source that causes it and the infection spreads to a certain limit? Or is there no limit, once infected - spreads forever so long as it is chunk loaded.
