So our server has been running for a while now and we have a few bases that are quite a ways from each other. What kind of options are there for teleporting? I know IC2 has teleporting but I believe it has massive power restrictions. Does the portal gun mod work well over long distances? can you make permanent portals?

Another option we were exploring was highspeed rail with either a nether tunnel or an overworld tunnel. But teleporting has stuck in the minds of our players and we were wondering what we could do.

thanks!

I think you have pretty much listed the best options already. The only thing I am not sure of is if thaumcraft has an option. I like the high speed rail. It is buggy and needs to go straight and level to go full speed, but it is surprisingly easy to make.

You can use portal spawners combined with wireless redstone and maybe even computers for a great teleportation system

If you have mystcraft, use mystcraft portals

Can you create Mystcraft portals in the Overworld that link to other places in the Overworld? I tried it with a Mystcraft book, since I found a new spot for a remote base thousands of blocks away from my main base, so I tried Mystcraft books, and it wouldn't let me use a book to an Overworld site from an Overworld site.

Portals: expensive, easy to maintain
Teleporters: very expensive, almost immposible to maintain, bad for long distance
Mystcraft: Cheap (if you use a nexus), easy, not in minecrack

Mystcraft books don't normally link to other places in the same dimension. You can change this with the link modifier, but that block is super expensive. The easier solution is to just go through another dimension (the nether will do fine) on the way to your destination

I don;t think you can copy books, something I wish I coulda done, but you could create any number of linking books while in the same spot.

can you copy books so you can have multiple entrances to the same age? I'm unclear how that works.
Well, not directly, but you can make as many books as you like to an age. You just go to that age and make the link books wherever you want them to connect. Direwolf did this with the previous SMP series with New Digger.

I guess, what i mean is can you create linking books in an age and then use those to get there form the overworld?

Indeed, and with ender chests you could provide them to people anywhere in the world easily too. Create book > put in a shared ender chest > easy travel for all.

There are 2 kinds of books, descriptive books and linking books. Descriptive books are made with a feather and create a whole new age, whereas a linking book is just a single book in a crafting table, and simply links to the spot where it was crafted. Both books only work between dimension and generally can't be used to teleport within a dimension; but, you could have a separate dimension with several linking books (on link book stands) going to different places in the overworld, this is generally called a nexus. Then, you just make linking books to the nexus and hand 'em out

alright, that sounds like the best idea, I just tried portal frames and unlike the forum page they do not require ender pearls but rather miniature black holes that require netherstars!

I just wanted to point out, you do not have to use a crafting table. The crafting area in your personal inventory is enough to make a linking book, so carry a stack of regular books, and if you find someplace nice you'd like to revisit, create a linking book. Using a Notebook and a writing desk, you can change the title of your linking books to make them more informative as well, rather than just Age 3, The Nether, Overworld, etc...

Ya that was a recent change.. aparently the creator of the mod thought they were too easy to make. And quite frankly he was right, but still...

You are refering to mini black holes, no? My idea is that it should work like a minium stone or an RP tool, it has a durability bar and can be used to craft a few portal guns/frames

The Mystcraft nexus, if it's available to you, is a really awesome option. The crystal blocks you need are not very hard to find (I've never made a dimension that hasn't had them within 1km of spawn, most of the times in all directions). I'm very excited to actually put this method into practice.

And you can mix that approach with other approaches. I've been using the Nether as my nexus point for now (since our settlements are close enough to share nether exit portals), but the part that's so cool about the Nexus approach is that it's so very flexible. You can easily have multiple nexuses with multiple purposes and cross linking gates and use all your normal Railcraft solutions.

I'm told Deployers work with book holders in crystal gates. I haven't tested this, but if that works it could potentially be awesome for inter-dimensional high speed rails.
