high speed rails + portal = disaster waiting to happen :D

Alright while we're at it let me talk a bit more about mystcraft. The two annoying qualities about books is that they don't follow you (and are prone to dropping on the ground in your wake) and that they don't work inside an age, only between them. There is a very expensive endgame block called the link modifier that changes those, but it is quite the investment.

I've been thinking about writing a turtle program for books and portals. Next to each portal have an ender chest and a turtle. Have the turtle grab a book, put it in the portal, wait 5 - 10 seconds, then replace the book in the ender chest.[DOUBLEPOST=1359411100][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yeah it is... 8 diamond blocks, each taking 9 diamonds and a gold block. Ouch, that is expensive...

Wasn't that recipe supposed to be temporary? Then again, I've read something about how they plan on implementing the Link Modifier features in a different way, so I guess that's where my temporary is.

This doesn't matter so much for the application in question. You craft a suitably interesting stable age, then bring linkbooks from everyone's bases in and put them on lecterns, book stands or in portals. No fuss, no muss.

I wouldn't call a link modifier end-game. Definitely not. The Link Modifier is chump change compared to the Gravisuit I built.

Yes, it does cost a (stack + 8) diamond, and 9 gold.

But if he splits the cost between all parties involved, it's not unreasonable (or cheats and admin-spawns one).

im thinking that might be an eventuality, i was thinking that i might admin-spawn in some portal frames when i saw how much they were, but mystcraft seems cheap enough to ligitly work.

The Mystcraft nexus, if it's available to you, is a really awesome option. The crystal blocks you need are not very hard to find (I've never made a dimension that hasn't had them within 1km of spawn, most of the times in all directions). I'm very excited to actually put this method into practice.

And you can mix that approach with other approaches. I've been using the Nether as my nexus point for now (since our settlements are close enough to share nether exit portals), but the part that's so cool about the Nexus approach is that it's so very flexible. You can easily have multiple nexuses with multiple purposes and cross linking gates and use all your normal Railcraft solutions.

I'm told Deployers work with book holders in crystal gates. I haven't tested this, but if that works it could potentially be awesome for inter-dimensional high speed rails.

By nexus, do you mean an item? or just use a realm as a hub?

He means a myscraft age. One that you could teleport to and it has portals to all of your other overworld destinations.

Yeah, which requires Crystals.

Personally, I searched 70 worlds for Dense Ores (finally got it) and never got Crystals. Yup, I got dense ores before crystals.

Communal Link Modifier is probably the best way. If you add the link book id to the Forestry Adventurer's Backpack, you can store the Linking books in it.

In every world that I've used mystcraft in, I have never had trouble finding crystals. Not even much trouble finding dense ores either. Typically I find both within my first 20-30 ages. However I've never seen the charged symbol, or accelerated.

with mystcraft, what do i do with all of these ages lying around that i'll never use again?
DestructoPack / Void Pipe.

Then go into your server folder and delete the DIM folder because each book takes a lot of storage space on your hard drive (depending how much of it you explored.... sometimes up to 30MB per age!).

If you delete the data/agedata_##.dat file too, then you can recycle age IDs.

In and of themselves it's not a huge issue. In Beta A I think we had 130 ages and the backup size went from default about 350 MB to 800 MB (some of that was just modifying the world and exploring too).

Mystcraft/Minecraft is pretty good about unloading worlds after you leave them. It mainly gets outrageous if people are mining in separate worlds with Quarries.

With my MCadmin open i notice that it takes quite a while for the memory usage to settle out and it seem to glitch all the users when people use books several times in a row.

Oh yes, we institute rules of not traveling with more than 1 other person on the server.

Keep in mind, people can barter/collaborate.

You can transfer symbols to Descriptive books, and then another person can read that symbol into their Notebook.

It's really the initial generation of the world that kills it, since a player loads 441 chunks and all of those have to be generated at one instant. But yeah, if you want to play Mystcraft.... some servers disable Descriptive book crafting and the server admin creates a few worlds for people to play with.

Might be a good thing to do, with the new RP2 Cave World marble spawning bug which can crash your server.

Wait. How come no one suggested Ender Chests?

EDIT: Oh. Person teleportation, not item teleportation.
