There's nothing particularly wrong with Horizontal cases, but towers have better heat management. Heat rises, so you put the hotter components lower and the heat moves up away from the components. Then the fans draw cool air in at the bottom, and push hot out the top.

I suggest looking at the Mini-ITX cases and motherboards. They're slightly better at heat, and while they don't always have room for expansion, most of the time you end up with a complete new system by the time you have any new one.

Definitely watch sales. I got in just under the price you're aiming for, not counting Windows.

When you say don't always have room for expansion does that mean processors etc may not be able to be upgraded in the future or something else?

To answer your previous question about motherboards, I can tell you about AMD all day long... Maybe an Intel user can do the same for that line?

Ryzen simplified things quite a bit when it was introduced in March... All Ryzen chips will work in all full-sized Ryzen-based motherboards since all are based on the same CPU socket, the AM4. (Mini-ITX may be limited to APUs only when they come out in the fall)

I would place my priorities as follows:

1) What features do I want? (dual GPU, Number and type of USB ports, Number of SATA ports, etc.) The X370 currently has the most features, followed by the B350, the A320, the X300 and the A300.

2) How much ram at what speed? The faster ram you buy allows a faster CPU later, unless you don't mind replacing ram later as well

3) CPU. With Ryzen, you can get the cheapest CPU now and plug a faster one in later with no other changes, unless you need faster ram as shown in item 2

As to your question about Expansion, Mini-ITX motherboards are much smaller, about a quarter the size of a full ATX board. This may limit you to a single video slot if you're lucky or an APU (CPU and GPU on the same chip) and only 2 ram slots. These have not yet come out for Ryzen so we'll have to see.

[Edit] I stand corrected. The chipsets intended for the ITX mainboards won't be out until the fall. Boards available now are running with chips intended for ATX boards, which leads me to question exactly how well cooled they are. I'll be watching my normal Hardware channels to see if any of these get tested.

I am thinking of going to look at this, I've been in touch with the guy who seems decent and I think I can get it at £400 ish minus the game seat and webcam (which I said I didn't want) Opinions on the system?
