(I mistakenly made this thread in the General Discussion forum; if a mod could delete that one, that'd be great.)

I'm playing with the Ultimate 1.0.1 pack, and have made some nice progress in Thaumcraft. But now I'm stuck. I've managed to research a few wands, a few pieces of gear, goggles, etc., I've got about 10 warded jars with essentia in them, I've got alembics, and so on.

Not bad.

I've been going at it blindly, only initially looking up how to get started with Thaumcraft. But now I seem to be stuck.

BEES BEES BEES BEES BEES BEES BEES BEES

Everything I research seems to be toward some sort of bee frame or bee device or bee something! I haven't even begun to delve into bees yet, so while I'm sure these items are probably awesome, they currently don't interest me at all. I start researching something, and it's bee-related. I pull the research out of the table and try something else. Bee-related!

Worst of all, I keep researching things I've already successfully researched!

Is there any way to avoid researching the same things repeatedly? Is there any way to "direct" where my research goes? Notably, as far away from bee-related things as possible? I mean, I even "cheated" and decided to look up a specific research. But when I tried to research those aspects, it just happened to research something bee-related that also contained those aspects!

Thanks for any suggestions.

My first attempt at Thaumcraft research also left me with a gold chest half full of incomplete research pages until I thought about it for a little while and arrived at the first rule of Thaumcraft research:

Never pull incomplete research pages out of the table. Whether it's for something you want or not, you're much better off to simply finish it and move on so you don't keep getting that same item/topc again and again and again.

There aren't so many Thaumcraft items/topics to research that getting one you're not interested in represents a serious setback. As far as the bee stuff goes, you'll get half a dozen frames (give or take), a scoop, and two specifically bee-related things and then you're done. Anything else you start to research will no longer have the chance of being bee related.

When you get a new research note, pulling it from the table and attempting to get another one may well result in getting the same research note (assuming you're looking into similar materials).

This is true up until you complete the research on that subject and right-click with the finished note in hand (to add it to your thaumonomicon). After that, you'll no longer get new research notes about that subject, ever.

However, adding finished research to your thaumonomicon does not remove any duplicate research notes you already have. So yes, it's usually most efficient to research every new note as soon as you get it, whether you're interested or not.

If you really want to try to skip notes, then at least pay attention to the little coloured dot on each new note you get. The vast majority of the time, if a new note's colour matches that of a note you already have, it's a dupe.

As a minor note, I do believe that unfinished research is fairly rich in Cognito aspects. As a low cost (but non-stacking) item, it's worth remembering.

Also, your string is going to be a big part of most of the bee-related research, so never start with string.

If you know what aspects you need for the next research you want, for example, you want to research golemancy but the infernal furnace pops up, then you just add more aspects that golems have (motus, imperito, lignum) instead of praecantatio, ignis...
