strange location for emerald ore

in the middle of the ocean, there was a really big oil well (6000 buckets or so), and I drained it.

on level 13 inside that bubble, I found emerald ore.

till now I thought, that stuff spawns just in extreme hill biomes, and high up in the mountains. what is it doing on layer 13 in the middle on an ocean?

It generates between layers 4 and 32, according to the MC wiki.
But not in Oceans? Are you sure it's Emerald and not Green Sapphire? And it's definitely in an ocean?

it's ocean 500 blocks in every direction. (okay, there is a small island close to it)

and it's definitively emerald. same texture as the gregtech sapphire and ruby, but in green. and when I mined it with the rockcutter, it said emerald ore aswell.

Did you update your copy of RailCraft? I saw in the changelog that ore clusters can spawn in the ocean with the latest version, but that's for 1.5.1/2 and I have no idea if that includes emerald.
Alternatively perhaps you're also using Metallurgy? It changes ore generation enough to allow for such a thing to happen.

no, it's simply a world with "vanilla" ultimate. no changes done.

Emerald ore spawns in various biomes. I have found it in other biomes than extreme hills. It was another of the extrabiomesXL biomes though.

It may have something to do with TE as the configs mess around with ore spawning maybe?

the only thing that is different: my world runs with the setting "large biomes". and the sea is annoyingly large...

My question is why were you pumping oil out of the middle of an ocean in the first place on large biomes they are huge with a capital 3

because it was the largest oil well I found so far. and it was "just" 1000 blocks away from my base.

and having close to 8.000 buckets of oil in a tank together with my refinery isn't that bad.
