If you had multiple items in the same chest, you could attach for example 5x itemducts to the chest each with their item filtered. The redstone signal that calls for the cart to be spawned would also then extract the specific item by applying the redstone signal to the proper itemduct. Just not sure how to control that you only get a single item out with itemducts. Maybe there is some other mean that has finer control.
XU has exactly that. It has the "rationing pipe" which keeps exactly one stack of an item in connected inventories and the "ultra rationing pipe" which is the same except for it does a single item instead of a stack.

I wasn't going to comment, since this is beyond my level of silliness, but:

You can set the stack size on an item duct with a pneumatic servo on it. I know it goes down to 1, I've never checked if it goes above 64 (though it wouldn't be terribly useful even if it did).

Yeah but even with this it is really hard to control how many stacks it pulls during its "on time". You would have to do something with redstone pulse length manipulating to make sure to only get it to output one single stack of the chosen size I think. And even then I think it would be rather random if it works or not due to randomness in processing load, lag etc.

Itemducts are really missing a "once per redstone pulse" option.

True, but they also have a relatively slow rate of extraction and a pulse former to make a 1-tick signal isn't too bad to make.

The problem I have experienced when using itemducts and timer is just that it will not actually reliably extract on pulses. And even if it did the, having to do this for every single item becomes way too complicated to set up I think.
Think it would be simpler to exploit the "one item" inventories as mentioned before, as it requires little setup.

Well, I've just finished building a pure Railcraft sorting and retrieval system. I'll upload a video tonight.

No you can put as many on as chest as you can fit. You sure you set it up properly with servos/redstone signal?

Itemducts might not work properly if put on double wooden Chests. Think this is down to the fact that the chests are still considered separate despite showing as one.

You were right i had everything set up right with the double chest i just have to manually put it in the bottom (which defeats the purpose of why i set it up) Do you know of another way i could keep the setup but get the glass bottles out automatically too?
do you think if i put the glass bottle pipe underneath the same chest as the other pipes it will take the bottles from the same area as everything else?

Ehm you will have to explain from the start what you are trying to do. You are trying to remove glass bottles from a chest?

Easiest fix is simply making a Iron chest from Iron chest mod (if you have it). That way you get the same size inventory but wont have the bug with the itemducts.

do you think a double reinforced iron chest would work to? i dont have that mod

anyways im using the glass bottles from mob witch grinder to use in my exp bottler so i can then shoot those out from an autonomous activator into a sewer so i can get mob essence. the reason for this being kinda comlicated is just using a grinder with some mob spawners gets to laggy for me so im doing it this way btw i am playing attack of the b team

Never really used Better Storage myself, but any chest that isn't a merger of 2 separate chests like the normal double wooden chest will be fine.

Aaaand here it is! A sorting/retrieval system using only Railcraft and optional Iron Chests. Now, it's slow, and I had to get creative with the item retrieval system, but it WORKS. Try that one on for size, SatanicSanta !

OMG this is great

Very cool! I didnt know about that trick with the tickets. I probably wont be using rails as a sorting system personally but I can see lots of cool applications for what you just showed me.
