This is partly a tech support issue, and partly trying to understand some of the infrastructure.

Both Mystcraft (with renderlabels=true) and Rei's Minimap will display text superimposed over the world rendering. A behavior I've observed with both is that if part of the text would render "behind" geometry, that part of the text ends up greyed out.

Since both mods exhibit this behavior, I'm curious what shared functionality they're accessing. Is this something in Minecraft itself? Something in Forge, or in a particular mod? What controls how this works?

Aside from simply wanting to know more, it'd be nice if I could suppress that behavior in certain (or all) cases; having half of a mystcraft book label be greyed out while I'm standing right next to it is somewhat offputting.

I've tried doing searches to find more information about this, but either the information isn't out there, or (more likely) I just don't know the right terms in order to locate it.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction?
