On my one computer, when I play Monster, the game runs smooth. On my other computer, I get a serious lag spike every 10 seconds, like clock-work, and the spike lasts for about 2 seconds. Needless to say, this renders the game pretty much unplayable on that computer. Both computers have 4 GB of RAM and use most (but not all) of it to run FTB. I've tried creating new worlds in both creative and survival, playing on multiplayer, and turning all my graphics settings all the way up and down, but the lag spikes remain exactly the same.

How do I get rid of them?!

I left the default settings for ram allocation. Not sure what that is, but it uses about 80% of my 4 gigs.
The machines are different. The second machine has a slightly slower (GHz) CPU, but I've seen computers with even lower running the game better.
FYI, the computer OS was actually 32 bit before, and was having this issue, so we thought upgrading to 64 bit might help, but it did not.

remember that windows uses 2gb by default. the game itself requires 3GB atleast. an upgrade may be in order

Install java 64-bit aswell. Just upgrading the OS wont help.
Make sure you also examine how much of your processor is being used.

If you are using map writer as your map then try disabling that as it can eat up your ram and can affect fps. I use the zans minimap myself.

Edit: What dante says is true you can't give ftb, all your ram because you will starve your system and it will start using the virtual ram i.e hdd to compensate and you will get lag and fps issues. I would give it 2gb and no more.

If you are able to upgrade the ram then I would add another 4gb to them if possible.

Yes, first thing I did after upgrading the OS to 64 bit was upgrade the JVM as well.
@Dante: Not sure if it's different in Linux, but both computers are running Ubuntu 13.10 linux, not Windows. And the fact that my memory manager indicates the memory goes from virtually nothing before running, and up to 80% while running, seems to indicate that it's using a little more than 2gb.
Processor on the problem machine is hovering between 90% and maxed out.

No minimap installed.

Thanks Eyamaz. I guess I underestimated the JVM arguments.
The game runs like a modular powersuit now. Even boosted all the video settings all the way up and it didn't even flinch. Amazing.
