is decompiling not illegal?

Usually it isn't, but it entirely is based off of the licence that the software was using for the version you intend to decompile for. If it isn't illegal, it is generally just considered rude. Just don't blatantly copy other peoples' code (that I believe is plagiarism anyway) and don't go bragging about ripping apart other sources. how do i put it in eclipse? it does not show up when i paste it in the workspace folder

Files .java go into workspace/'project name'/src folder.

also i tried looking at open source mods but could not work out how to see the source (i downloaded the source)
