So I've recently come across a somewhat older computer... Specifically a Dell Latitude D600. I had this thing a long time ago, but it became sort of forsaken when I later got a newer, much more powerful machine.

This thing runs Windows XP Professional, and has 2GB of RAM, a an Intel Pentium 1.8 GHz Processor. When I found this machine I found the desktop littered with files from the era when my school didn't store assignments online. I got around this by making a "organized" list in the form of shitty html documents... Saved locally, to this one machine... On my desktop... Scattered about, not even in a folder. I also found an install of Roller Coaster Tycoon, Flight Simulator 98, and Robot Arena 2. I mused over seeing Clippy in Office 2003, and greatly enjoyed seeing the things from my past that weren't the result of an unbelievably stupid idea.

But I wanted more. I put this in the General FTB forum for a reason. I want this thing to run Minecraft. I downloaded the FTB and Technic (Don't even think about it) Launchers, and started by running FTB. When I logged in and launched, the first thing I noticed is that this poor machine couldn't even handle giving Java a single GigaByte of memory. I turned it down to 512 MB, and launched again. Much to my pleasure, the game launched successfully. I proceeded to generate the first world this machine would ever see. It took over a minute to prepare spawn and toss me into the game, and I knew then that this wouldn't be as easy as I thought. When I unpaused the game and looked around, I experienced unplayable amounts of lag as my FPS dropped to near nothingness. I knew I couldn't manage a good game in this state. So I come to you, beast feeders, asking for advice. Any ideas how, with creative configuring, I can get that game running on this machine?

Turn off all the Extra Biomes XL biomes that have huge trees. The redwoods, the pines, and whichever one(s) have the giant oaks. Those trees tend to cause problems. You could just remove Extra Biomes XL altogether, but that might not be necessary.

That's the only config I can think of that should effect initial world generation that significantly.

Also, Optifine Light (Not smooth and DEFINITELY not Ultra) would probably significantly help you get better FPS out of your RAM.

I'm currently running my FTB pack on 512 RAM dedicated, and having no problem at all.

Installing Optifine Light now. I don't mind a slow worldgen as much as I do an unplayable FPS. I can walk away and get something to eat or drink while I wait for that, as I do when I feel like genning a Dwarf Fortress world with a history longer than 50 years. However, I'd rather not have time to eat between frames.

EDIT: Well, I've ran into a technical issue that requires a bug report to be posted elsewhere. The launcher is under the delusion that the FTB Modpack contains absolutely no mods, and thus considers it logical to run a vanilla installation of the game.

The world generation lag from Extra Biomes XL lasts longer than you might think, and it has caused me similar (though less potent) issues to what you're describing. Thus my recommendation. It probably has more to do with the lighting calculation as a byproduct of the trees than the tree generation itself.

From a tech aspect you could see if its possible to overclock the procressor and make sure the ram is running as fast as it can. You could also maybe try giving the pagefile (virtual memory) more space but I have no idea how well that even works.

Other then that all I can think of is turn all graphics settings to lowest and if it has an actual graphics card then turn on the Open GL stuff.

Well, as my edit reveals, that time was for an unmodified worldgen. So it very well might take longer than I expect it to. But that means I'm expecting it. Logic. Either way, I don't mind doing something else while a world generates.

EDIT: Creeper Repo is down. I'll assume that's the problem.

Another EDIT: If I overclocked this thing, I would probably set something on fire. The battery shorted out so I have to run this thing solely off of AC power!

Excuse me if I interject, but is Optifine Light even compatible with Forge? Because the Optifine thread says it definitely isn't, and you need to use Standard instead.

Forge compatibility is irrelevant. It's a Jar mod which works on things that Forge doesn't touch. It's like asking if a plane is compatible with a submarine... there's no real need for them to be because they never interact.

When I tried dropping optifine light in the jar mods folder, it didn't register it as even being there when launching the game. Standard and Ultra did.

Yes, I've had the same experience when I tried it. And the thread explicitly states "does not work with Forge".

I like old computers as much as the next guy, but this just seems kind of silly. You're doing a lot of work to run something that's barely going to be playable at best. I mean you can forget going to the nether. The damn thing would blow up. Anyway that's just my two cents and if you're having fun go for it.

You will have a tough time getting a laptop that old to play minecraft effectively , the on board graphics chip is very underpowered .

From the spec sheet

"The Dell Latitude D600 features the ATI® MOBILITY™ RADEON™ 9000 graphics chipset with 32 MB of 64-bit DDR dedicated graphics memory for the most demanding applications. This 4X AGP solution features integrated video acceleration for watching high quality, full frame rate DVD on your notebook or connected to your external display, with exceptionally low power consumption"

While you may get it to work , it may never have a decent framerate.

I hope im wrong and good luck :)

-nevermind-

Make sure your render distance is at short or tiny and graphics are fast. You'll probably never be able to play on normal or far. Also, try disabling particles too (for rain, lava, fire, etc.). I've heard sound could cause lag as well, but I'm not sure how much.

If you happen to have that windows XP install disk and you don't have anything terribly important on there (you did say it was very old), then I would reformat it. Do a clean install, have no other programs on it but the default. Then install your basic anti-virus, web browser, and latest java (make sure you get the correct one).

Then install FTB. With a fresh install of the OS, your computer should theoretically be at optimal speed. That may help with running minecraft. (Although, I just remembered all those evil updates...)

You can also try FPS++.

Also, you may want to get a fan for the computer. Since minecraft will bring your CPU heat up quite a bit. Don't want your computer to overheat and die.

I would format the HDD and install linux. That should help with some of the issues. It is a much less demanding OS.

Hey guys
Im kinda having the same problem with my computer and although switching of windows aero my computer continues to slow down fast:
a week ago it was on 100 fps (SOOOOO happy at that) but now it's on 30 fps and I really havent done much
It's a dell studio 17 with 4GB of ram, intel core i5 processor and I cant quite remember the graphics card
I would really like some help I have the optifine ultra installed but when I try to switch to lite version my textures all muck up, how do I solve this
I have also installed the FPS++ mod from fishtaco and it really hasn't made much of a difference (I put it into the inst mods folder, is this wrong?)
Thanks
