Imitation rarely brings understanding.
I beg to differ...
If someone imitates something, and it works, but not properly
For example:
Let's say you make a powered light, powered by RoC, and in the current version with its settings, it produces light level 15 with 100 torque (just an example) but next update, you make it so it require 150 to emit light level 15.
So someone copies the old design, and finds it isn't as bright, so they tinker with it to get it to work how it should.

Yes, they copied the design. Yes it didn't work at first. But if they gave it a little tinkering they find out how to work it.

I am very much like this. I find something I want to do. Copy the design/code/etc. Then tweak it so that it works how I want it to work, not how it works when I copy it.

That assumes RC works like other mods in that doing it half-right makes it work half as well. In reality, RC done wrong - insufficient power, missing requirements, insufficient temperature, etc - does not work at all, and you would have exactly the same result doing it half right as if you tried to power it off of fruit juice. All the player learns is that this setup does not work. They have no indication as to the correct one, which may not necessarily resemble the current one - especially in cases of things I broke, like magnetostatic abuse - or be similarly within their capabilities in a survival environment ("I need liquid nitrogen now?!?").

Additionally, when things explained in a tutorial simply do not work, most users do not say "the tutorial must be out of date". They say "the mod is bugged", usually report it, and almost always complain.

Also, as we have seen many times, including several times on these forums, when someone is using "place this like this" tutorials for RC rather than doing any design work themselves, when RC is designed around that whole concept, they are usually in it as a means to an end, and have little if any interest in the actual problem-solving process that "true" fans enjoy. Concordantly, they get irritated, and often openly hostile, when told that they need to work things out themselves and play RC as it was designed. Just look for people complaining about magnetostatic nerfs "It's not fair I have to play the rest of the mod, all I want is bedrock armor".

Fully concur. Using RoC as the example, I would play with a system for a while, see if I could get things working, and then see how other people do something similar. This was particularly true with the fission reactors (ReC).

If I didn't use the works of others as inspiration, I'd just get stuck in a rut where my "more or less works" design gets by but with no real idea of how to improve or fix it.

The good news is that in my experience, if a tutorial doesn't work, most users simply say "the tutorial must be out of date", and rarely, if ever, "the mod is bugged."

I get bug reports daily from people following old tutorials. The big three right now are fusion reactor coolant, turbine lubricant, and HTGR nerfs. Those changes are six, nine, and twelve months old respectively.

Fuelling this is the fact that many people are only now switching off of Monster 1.1.1 - yes, most users never updated to 1.1.2 because, as one user put it, "updating is a pain, and it's not like the new versions do me any good".

Hang on, Monster 1.1.1 was the version before Electricraft was added (by default, anyway).

I can't imagine trying to store the power output of a decent reactor without Auroral batteries, that's scary...

I don't think the original intent was to store power at all (coils notwithstanding), but rather a real life user case scenario where power is expected to be produced for demand.

Of course nobody really wants to play like that, but there you go.

You know, that exact same argument was probably made by buildcraft purists when Thermal Expansion 1.0 was released :p

I do, and I prefer it to being anal-retentive about using my power at maximal efficiency.

Edited, and I'll stand by this estimate.

For many players, efficiency is god. Anal retention rhetoric disregarded.

Imitation rarely brings understanding.

Hmm, So I guess all the capital the western world spents on early learning is a waste? Nearly 100% of that is mimicking and memorizing.

Also I gained some understanding of your mod by using someone elses ideas. When I first tried RotaryCraft I thought it was a dumb mod possibly in frustration as I couldn't figure out how to get a grinder to work, I pretty much rage quit at that point.
Then I saw someone use a worm drive months later and I started using it as they did then everything regarding gearing started to click from that point. Imitation can't really be achieved without some understanding, it is also the bulk of all human learning you know firing up those mirror neurons and all. Then again Ikea style build by number replication never leads to understanding but Imitation can give you a great primer that leads to true mastery. Sometimes you need an example of a fully functioning system to gain a primer, it's even better if you build it yourself, so long as it doesn't stop there.

TBH I actually think maybe your mod design philosophy might be at odds with the practical experience based learners. It's more of an experimenter/ theorist type mod that requires some study before hand.

Update: I got the mod to work after some weird dimension id crashes, which were different from potion id conflicts. Regardless, everything is working fine now. I've used some of the resources posted here to form a basic understanding, and now I'm going to see what I come up with.

In regard to the mod-learning topic, minecraft mechanics can be a little counter-intuitive. I've used resources to figure how the heck certain blocks work. Past that, I'm all about experimentation. I'm glad that will be an aspect of rotary craft.

If you are talking about the United States... I can safely say, most of what you learn is a waste. Few subjects or disciplines should have such a focus on memorization and spitting back out, sentence for sentence, what you "learned". The only real exception is math. The education system is influenced by corporations and politicians all the way to the point of insanity. These entities understand so little of teaching... It makes me so mad to see education ruined and squandered. You waste and lose so much of your life to nothing by going to those "schools". It should be the biggest embarrassment to the U.S.A. Sadly, it isn't. The "government" is focused on making sure no one has to work for anything. It is the epitome of vacuousness. I am currently in middle school (12-13 through 14-15) and the fact I can get "A's" without any real effort is almost ironic. The basis, or standard, for what you are required to know is pitiful. My hope is that it changes in high school.

I know this is off topic, but I just had to post it.

I'd give some high marks to English education as well.

I can dominate interviews and meetings and such just by virtue of "sounding" educated.

In my experience, most English classes are pointless. I have learned nothing this year in English. Nothing. Not even a new word or two. I find reading interesting and try to read at least an hour a day. Most of my fellow classmates read only when they are forced too. (Maybe 2-3 books in a 2-3 month period)

Respectfully, your experience is limited to school.

I can already tell you its paying off for you. Even if all they did was make you read for 2 hours straight, that's good enough. Unless you're brutally leaning on your auto-correct, your English and grammar are excellent.

Its not about learning new words, its about ingraining language itself as a tool. It makes it easier for you to vary your vocabulary to a specific task, understand others, and frankly make yourself look smart.

I was talking about primary level schooling, you know ABC's 123's. Adolescent level education should be when understanding trumps recitation and process.

While I too find corporations influencing education to be insane in modern times, you must be aware that the entire idea that sparked public education was to further the interests of business men in the Industrial Revolution. Apparently morons and ignoramuses couldn't operate steam powered machinery, their fumbling about losing limbs and damaging equipment hurt efficiency.

*Pushes dictionary and thesaurus out the door* :p
Eh, my experience is limited. It's just... The amount of time that I seem to waste at school is discouraging for me.
