I've seen his standup too many times. I was born and raised in los angeles. Never saw him outside greek theater or other small venues back in the days I used to hang in hollywood going to live shows all over the place on weekends.
In 1988, I moved up to san jose. About 2 months after I got up, my best friend got us tickets to go to Atari convention at san jose convention center. I was so psyched. I was an 8 bitter and ST fanboy. ran a bbs back in LA, etc...
Waiting in line, guy behind me made some off comment about something from a show RW did (tbh, I don't recall the actual quote, but was from a joke). I turned around saying that was the best robin williams impersonation and I caught myself halfway through that one word when right in front of me, there he was. I was so taken back. he, my friend and I (and a couple other people) talked about ST's and other normal person stuff for the 30 minutes in line and then we all parted. I think he was the highlight of the entire show. The guy was just so down to earth, funny, personable. Everything you'd think the dude would be like in real life. I've met stars at the 7-11 near my house on cahuenga all the time. John ritter was probably the coolest. He played me on asteroids once. Telly savalas was a douche. Not many more I can think of, but robin williams. That dude .... I heard about him going the way he went and why he went and I still don't understand. They say the funnier you are on stage, the more fucked up your life was before you got there. I keep on wondering how steve martin has lasted this long. I hope he stays around. Big Sads still.
I think the most engaging thing was he could turn a sad role into a sad role with a twist and a funny side that had you laughing and crying at the same time. There are NOT that many people that can pull that off as perfect as he could. He deserved way more accolades than he got.
Robin, I'll boot up rescue at fractulus for you. In an emulator of course.
He was real fond of that part of the game where the hand comes out of the ship and strikes the glass of your screen. I told him I fell out of my chair the first time that happens. His reply: I fall out of my chair every time! How do you not?
