Hello.

I was wondering if anyone with knowledge of the specs of Pahicraft (it seems to work very well with all the mods installed and many people playing at once), since when the FTB pack comes out me and my friends will have to rent a server to host our FTB modpack sessions.
I have absolutely no clue about how much RAM is actually needed, or disk space having no knowledge of the requirements of how all the mods combined behave.
So, can anyone help, or even point me towards an European server host for the future FTB pack? It's gonna be a private server.
Thanks in advance!

there is a lot more to it than just ram.

I run a prity healthy server and we have 32 Gigs allocated. you can run a 20 to 30 player server stable on 4 or 5 gigs with a lot of mod packs
We normaly run on about 3Gig of use when we got 25 players online. But sometimes it will charge up to 8Gigs of use.
Its all dependent.

Also you need to tweak a lot of stuff. A strait download server wont be as stable as a tweaked server as well.
Adding management plugins like:

Clearlagg: Keep down the entity amount in your world. Especial with overflowing quarrys
WorldBorder: Keep your map at a decent size if you have lower disk space.
SafeExplosions: disables all black damage from explosions so no extra block renders when stuff does boom.
NoItem: Ban items that can create lag to your server
HawkEye: Is basicly a anty grief plugin that tracks block placement but its better then coreprotect since it handles data better. Also its not limited on Name length (16) like Coreprotect is so it wont error with [Industrialcraft] fake player
Craftbukkit++: (Build75) for 1.2.5) Basically is a new jar file that will betteryour performance by stacking items on the floor, limiting mobs & improve chunk load and render mechanics.

Laggy items:
BlockBreakers: A bugged item that will create a lot of lag if they are used for cobolgens on 0.02 delay. Also the can dupe items.
Computercraft: Some bad code can be created that will switch redstone every 0.0000001 Second and crash your server even. and a lot more
WaterStrainers: Not tested on 1.3.2 but on 1.2.5 they can carrupt a chunk due to a bug
Watermills and Windmills: Not special but they are so cheap that players make 350 unit farms of this. This will need your server to compute 350 times 20 ticks a sec the power output not counting the cables they are hooked up to

I hope this helps out a bit :)

Thank you sir! Our server however will be 10-slot with no need for griefing prevention plugins, as we all know each other. I'm in the process of sifting through the plethora of minecraft server hosts. If I find anything worth mentioning to you guys, I'll pm it to the ones that show interest to avoid advertising publicly.

Liking this thread. Good response Greedseed,

Anyone know any other potential tweaks to server hardware / software..?

Possibly mention Mystcraft.

The server I play on has a lot of RAM but I don't believe it's using it quite as it should.

I've really been trying to learn to build responsibly, buffering with regulators / relays, as few timers as possible etc.

Still, my age keeps lagging like crazy while others are ok. The Overworld lags too though.

I know without logs no specific answer can be given, i'm just wondering about general opinion of Mystcraft's needs, and any other server tech tips.

Cheers
Swaff

you can download the latest version of Essentials with is 1.3.2 but will work on 1.2.5
Only social spy wont work on 1.2.5 due to the hookin changes but oke.

If you have that you can /lag to look at your server ticks and see if it is the server that cant keep up or not

Tweaking hardware and software is tricky there. Since "Minecraft" is coded as a single core application it will not (yet) use multi threads
Like we have 12 Core's(24 Threads) running on our system and MC will only use one. There are some plugins why can use a second core for the plugin load but that is insignificant since Mc world render, Entity loads and IC2 are the biggest loads on a server. As long as they cannot get to be multicored we are very limited.

A lot of servers solve this issue by purchasing CPU's with less core's and more Hz.
In our case we run 2.4Ghz per thread but if we would buy only 4Core CPU's in stead of 6Core and with 3.4Ghz, than this will improve MC performance a lot!

Alto there is a lot of chatter about MC that is gone tweak its code to work better with the last java 7 witch now has multicore support.
This minecon is gone be all about the new Mod API and then they are gone stop with new content and focus on client and server performance tweaks.

I have to admit i am also still looking to the secret of some mod server that run 300 players smooth with less or the same hardware then i do, but time will tell :)

As i unlock more of the secrets of MC servers and how to tweak and stableise i wil try to share it here :)

I found on the homepage that creeperhost is advertised directly. Does anyone know what of the packages offere would be best for a 5-10 player server running the upcoming FTB pack?

If your goal was 2-5, zombie, but above 5, 2G or ram just won't cut it when you will have dark rooms, milking machines and/or logistic system.
But 22€ a month, you will want your players to participate to the costs I think^^

Thank you guys! I'll try zombie and eventually go up to spider then. I'll let you know what the results will be.

A Spider for 5-10 people on an FTB modpack ? Are you yoaking? :p
You only need a Slime for that amount of users, your world shouldn't be too large and if you ever want to expand you can upgrade when you wish.

Luke, we are talking about setting up a server with the full modpack, without disallowing things such as Frame quarries and such, all of this without lag.

It does take quite a lot of memory (RAM) if you want to experience a moded multy player experience without falling into lava because of block lag and such.

a mod pack is a much bigger load the a clean server.

Just to say a normal user no modpacks use up to 20KB/s Bandwith. While a modpack user can use up to 100 to 150KB/s due to the extra items in the world.

The ram use is not so a big issue there are a lot of fixis to get a low ram use. Like i sed we can run our server with 20 players online as low as 2Gig ram due to all the tweaking and supportive features we installed.
CPU power is what you need next to bandwith

Altho a bit of extra ram as a buffer is always nice if you can

Would a Zombie server on creeperhost be enough for around 7 people? Probably no frame quarries (maybe 1) or large scale, crazy builds.

...Anyway, can we get someone from the FTB team to give us the specs of forgecraft/pahicraft? I don't see why it would not be possible.

You really want to know? I'll tell you, but no one exactly knows the specs so I'm giving you rough estimates.
Whatever crazy rpm hard drive, just one of them.
96gb Ram
2x6 Core CPU (Sandybridge)

And even that server lags when people aren't sensible.

Those specs seems a little bit off what would be a reasonable setup. Anyway, I'd like someone with direct knowledge of the server to respond to this thread -.-
