Well I want to venture into making a Frame Quarry for the first time to outdo my Buildcraft quarry.

I can't decide whether to Make it sort of a tunnel bore system so it goes Horizontal Or to make it a vertical system.

Other then the obvious thing of ores being at different levels what advantages would one have over the other?

If I did a Vertical system I would need to figure out how to detect when it hit bedrock so it knows when to move. I wouldnt have that issue with the Horizontal one but I would miss the higher level ores unless I went way overboard and added tons of block breakers to cover all the levels.

I don't mind making a ton of block breakers but only if its worth doing so.

Any suggestions on this?

Thanks

I would suggest a constructing a tunnel bore since you can make it at a specific height in which you desired ore is most common and it can go as long as you want without much of a need for maintenance;)

Keep in mind powering a tunnel bore will be annoying with thermpiles on board or getting BT batteries via enderchests and automating battery boxes hooked up to solar panels or a windmill or two.

I'd say go sideways. Just make it taller for the upper ores that you want. If you can figure out how to make the vertical one go up when it's done and move the right number of spaces over, it still wouldn't be optimal unless you went up to really high heights. In certain biomes, the level can get really high, and this will lead to more pointless stuff. Having one at level 50 to 5 is better because if you're in a biome with the height of 150+, you don't have to go through all that cobble to get to the Copper/Tin you're looking for.

so, how do you turn a redpower tunnel boring machine? that's why i say build a vertical machine and move in 3 dimensions

I suggest making a 6 axis base with a giant world eater facing downwards, extending down with redstoned tube frames via deployer(brought back up to a block breaker), complete with a locking mechanism to prevent it from losing the mining head. The six axis drive on the main ship means you can send it anywhere, including over a mountain(world height notwithstanding!), and the frame deployer you can harvest the whole mountain. Also it looks a bit like a downwards facing piston in action, if a piston ate everything it's face touched and extended a insane distance.

This will actually work, unlike a frame quarry that can only harvest in two directions, which is the limit of a horizontal frame quarry. I mean, at that point you might as well just use a Tunnel Bore from Railcraft. Unless of course you're using it to replace the Tunnel Bore, in which case that's a good idea, but you need a second frame quarry for moving 90 degrees.
Now if the Zeppelin mod was updated, this could in theory be done with one horizontal quarry head, but you would need to get into a bigger area to turn around. Using a upwards facing quarry head could help for that, but you would need to use the hacksaw pattern for getting up, which is the only issue with a mining bathysphere, incidentally.(which was my original frame quarry idea. 6 heads with block breakers, but you would need to use either the hacksaw pattern for each direction, or you would need a more complex quarry head on each side which could automatically do that for you before retracting and locking again, which was what I decided I would use, until I realized I needed frame pipes first for even hacksaw heads for it)

if by horizontal you mean a tunnel bore, and by vertical you mean a straight up quarry, then I'd probably say horizontal since you can configure it to be at the specific level you want to to, that way you'll get more of the materials that you want such as copper or diamonds and less cobble. Whereas if you have a quarry, you get a ton of cobble which you usually don't need. So i'd say if you have a large recycler system then you can get quite a bit of scrap for your uu system.

You use enderchests, a few rp-solars, a tiny sorting system and lots of batteries. Works like a charm. ;)
