I just started getting into mod packs today so I don't know a lot about them. I can play normal vanilla Minecraft at around 300 FPS so I thought for sure I could play mod packs without experiencing any lag. It is true but I get random lag spikes. I have no base so I am sure it is nothing I have done. As stated before it is completely random. It has become annoying because if I am fighting a mob at the time it really messes me up. I don't know what specs and other info you need so you will have to ask me and I will give it to you. I am looking for tips of what is causing this and how to fix it. Sorry again for not knowing what info I need to give.

When in doubt, it's better to provide too much info instead of not enough.

Java parameters, forge log ( in a spoiler or on pastebin, or something similar so it doesn't clog the thread ), system specs, and more info on the lag would be a start.

Often, "random lag" is caused by poor java settings causing garbage collection to go crazy. To help with this, we specifically need your java version, your systems ram ( if youre on a laptop or anything with shared memory, make sure to mention that. ), and your current settings.

While in game, you can press F3 to bring up the debug. In the top right is some information about memory usage. Youll often see this go to like 99%, then the lag hits, then it drops down to 60% and the lag ends. That would be garbage collection doing its thing.

I've never used TW2 before, so I'm not sure what settings to expect. Have you tried giving it either 2.5 or even 3 gigs? ( Don't go over 3 though. )

Also, make sure nothing is running in the background. Anti-virus, youtube videos, etc.

You can try enabling the mod Opis, and run it ( /opis ), but that's not particularly likely to find anything in your case. It's a profiler, and is great at finding things in your base that have caused a slowdown, but not really for random spikes that go away while standing still.

Do you have any kind of auto backup system? Those can cause some lag while in the process of backing up.

I just checked and it wasn't the garbage collection because the memory stayed almost the same when the lag hit. I also heard putting in different JVM arguments could help. Is that true? I tried the ones I have now and I don't think they helped very much.

EDIT: Also, looking at my computer specs should I be able to play mod packs smoothly? I brought up the ram to 2.75 and it didn't change anything. I have also heard the mod FastCraft might help.

EDIT: I also tried out DireWolf20 pack because I have been wanting to play that and it happens there too. I will average 100 FPS but then spikes come and it goes down to around 10 - 20. When the lag ends it goes back up to around 100. I really want to know if there is a fix or I simply can't play mod packs.

It should run fine, particularly on the 1.6.4 packs. ( 1.7.10 has been very problematic )

Java arguments are like Optifine: Hit and miss. Sometimes they help, sometimes they make things worse.

Speaking of Optifine, have you tried that?

Fastcraft can indeed help as well.

Also, try a shorter render distance, and fast graphics. Render distance has an exponential impact on performance, and fast vs. fancy graphics really makes pretty little difference on the visuals. These are things I would expect to have a consistent impact on FPS though, instead of occasional lag spikes. ( Ignoring world gen obviously. )

Have you double checked your computer for anything else running? Try running a virus scan as well.

1.7.10 has been very problematic. Long-term or temporarily? I have tried running Optifine in creative when I was messing around with stuff and I got a crash report saying that I should remove Optifine. Sadly I didn't save the report and couldn't get it to happen again. This also happens when I use Optifine. Is there a specific way to install Optifine so that these problems won't happen? It helped a lot when I used it. Correct me if I am wrong but I think Fastcraft is only for 1.7.10 so it wouldn't help me with TW2. I did try it in DireWolf20 and I was still getting spikes but did have a little better performance. I will try a shorter render distance and fast graphics. I have checked my computer for other applications running. I ran a virus scan on my computer and on the USB drive I keep my FTB files on. No threats were detected.

Does Techworld have TiCon? If it has, that was probably the message you recieved. Then you're good to go.
How do I fix this? I am pretty sure this only happens when I use Optifine.
