The maximum default tank size is indeed 7x7x8, storing 6,272 buckets (which each bucket being 1000mB, or "millibuckets", of liquid which is where enoch is getting his millions from)

You can increase the maximum floor dimensions from 7x7 to 9x9 in the config, but the maximum height of 8 blocks cannot be changed. So the largest possible singular iron tank is 9x9x8, storing 10,368 buckets.

However, you can stack iron tanks vertically if you place valves in the right slots, and they will combine their inventories. So in practical application, the largest possible Railcraft iron tank is 9x9x248 blocks large, storing a staggering 321,408 buckets of liquid. The world height limit of 256 and the bedrock layer starting at 5 prevents you from stacking any more tanks on top.

i know this is a Rather old Post, but couldnt find any other posts about this..
you Mention Stacking RC tanks..
i got atm, 4 9x9x8 tanks next to eachother, and would love to stack those into on (have my base at lvl 72, so could have 4 of these below.
could you "explain" how i do this, as i tried to place the valves on each block of the "test" tank i made, but it counts them as 2 seperate tanks, and no fluids is transfered between them :)

I think maybe the RC tanks valve behavior have changed a bit since this post was made, so not sure if this still works.

But since then RC have added Steel tanks that hold double the volume. So making a max sized one of those and you might not have to stack them.

i think they have, as it doesn't work anymore..
that was a good idea :D as i need a HUGE amount of storage for lava.
i have emptied 3 caves so far, and im up to around 34K buckets of lava. :D
im powering my IC, TE and Forestry machines with lava.
IC and forestry from geothermal generators and TE from the Magmatic dynamo (well actually 4 of each)

but would have loved to "save" some area space, as i'm starting to pump in oil from the sea (found 8 colums of oil within 50 blocks of eachother, 50x50 block area)
so will need the space for additional tanks for the oil and fuel.

Personally I prefer to just set it up so they get fed continuously instead of having a big tank. A single BC pump(use the Enderthermic Pump instead) in the nether with 4x Redstone engines will be plenty to keep up with 4x Geothermals and 4x Magmatic dynamos. Stick a Endertank directly unto the pump and you can make as many output Endertanks as you like.

i thought of that, but cant find any blaze rods in the nether :(
and whenever i "see" a ghast, i get killed :( they hurt like hell as i dont have Diamond armor yet (still making coal into diamonds :D)

Hehe, yeah that's a hurdle to be overcome :p I actually build myself a Advanced NanoChestPlate from Gravisuite before really going to the nether this time. I hate dying there :p But it was quite the investment.

hehe yeah. Diamonds arent excatly "comon" material :D hehe
even though i've removed an area of 9x81 blocks with the quarry, i have only found 6 diamonds and no emeralds..
But a ton of coal :D hehe

No but it can move the center block on the bottom which stores the info 'bout what's stored in the tank.

Dartcraft wrench works on the middle centre block too, I used to move whole tanks around with their contents using it.

Well, you could always build a new tank at where you want it then empty the old tank into an Ender tank that feeds into your new tank.

And then relocate your old tank once it is emptied out.

...Or because its railcraft, build a temporary loading and unloading system on rails using a tank cart and have it shoot back and forth between your railcraft tanks. Now you're railcrafting while you railcraft because I heard you like railcraft.
