I will never abandon 1.7.10 as long as Gregtech is stuck there but that doesn't stop me from playing newer packs.

Buildcraft is coming along for 1.12. Word on the street is that Azanor just uploaded a new beta of Thaumcraft (assuming it's 1.12), so there's a chance we see something playable before too long. If @Reika ever decided to update, a new Golden Age would be here again (obviously, no pressure, but I can dream).
Yeah, I share that dream. I guess @Reika's mods are a nightmare to port, but I do miss them in the 1.10.2 pack I'm currently playing, and I also miss TC. I'll be playing different versions for the time being - the new stuff available for 1.10+ has an attraction of its own, but the amount of content for 1.7.10 is unsurpassed and will probably remain that way for some time.

But yes, I definitely dream of having all the good stuff together for one version again. As I see, some modders have taken up multi-version development. I wonder how difficult that is.

Who says a new golden age needs the same mods. Embers, Psi, roots are all decent replacements for Thaumcraft.

Having multiple versions in development at once is usually quite difficult, but the relative ease of shifting mods from 1.9 forward to 1.12 has allowed some devs to keep backporting changes with little issue. There are some changes to the code, both base Minecraft and Forge which makes certain features impossible, or rather too much hassle, to be bothered with, to backport. This is usually where the mod dev decides to abandon the past to work on the future, and it happens at different stages of development for each mod. Obviously, devs with more time to spend on the project may take up the challenge to make the 1.10 version just as spiffy as the 1.12 version, but that's few and far between. Trying to keep tabs on an active 1.7 version of a mod written for 1.12 would be a nightmare I don't want to think about due to the drastic changes going from 1.7 to 1.8 alone.

Even together those three mods aren't any replacement for Thaumcraft. I'm okay with that actually, because there shouldn't be one. We've already seen what we get when an author fails to, or is unable to update a mod people over-relied on. If we can't have Thaumcraft, let's not pretend something else can take it's place and constantly compare it back to TC.

In functionality, perhaps, but thematically as well as artistically Thaumcraft is unique. There is no replacement for it. Also, both TC and ChromatiCraft add structures to the world that make it more interesting. My 1.10.2 world is rather boring in comparison.

Not that the newer versions don't have their own attractions. Speaking of theme and art, for instance, I love Environmental Tech, which nicely integrates into my preferred architectural style. Even so, IMO 1.10+ are definitely missing mods with the artistic quality of TC or ChromatiCraft. As far as know, of course. I don't have comprehensive knowledge of 1.10+ mods.

I've found 1.10.2 amazing even without Thaumcraft. Woot, Calculator, the New IC2, Extra Utils 2. Roots is similar to Thaumcraft in that their are pedestals around an altar which combine to form new items. Nothing can replace Thaumcraft but its not as if its necessary for a pack to have it.
