At this point I think all the Minecraft decision making is happening in Seattle, not Stockholm. "Microsoft is not in control of Minecraft" couldn't be further from the truth.
And I would like to point out that if this true then its working because my 2 $40 shares in Microsoft have gone to $75 in the last year and if Microsoft is doing well then Mojang is doing well. Mojang Doing well= More Updates, More Platforms and More Enjoyable gameplay as a whole.

I won't pretend to know who Jeb is or who supposedly orders who, but this Jeb person could very well be totally in charge of creative game decisions, and be completely not in charge of marketing and whatnot.

This may be the case, but ultimately Microsoft signs his paycheck. If they tell him to do something, his options are to either do it or walk. Welcome to the world of corporate business.
All Microsoft does is make suggestions. He can take those suggestions, he take them and edit them, or he can completely ignore them.
All Microsoft cares about at the end of the day is that they make a profit.
The Micro-transaction shop in MCPE and Windows 10 wasn't a bad idea, in fact getting those things on the phone very annoying so there was a value in adding, I made a post about this a while ago, asking if Microsoft would make Modpacks pay 2 play and you all reassured me that no it will never be that way. So I don't know why you guys are worried now.

We have had spirited debates on the topic a few times before, and mostly we've learned to agree to disagree while waiting for the future to show us what's really going to happen. For what it's worth, I have always been on record as someone who believes that before all is said and done, the market will be a pay to play environment, but I'm also on record as stating that I don't believe it is their current intention, but something that will creep in over time.

@Drbretto is right when he says the long term plan they continue to spout is their best chance to make ungodly amounts of money. I have my reservations that they will maintain course over the life of the project, but maybe I'm just a cynic. Either way, rest assured that Microsoft is pulling the strings now, and Mojang is the puppet doing the grunt work. So long as the money keeps rolling in, nobody is in a position to complain about the arrangement.

I love that we can appreciate other people's opinions here even if we don't always agree 100%. This is a quality place on the internet.

Yes this is the only place like this. On the Hypixel forum, I have an opinion, its either loved 100% or hated 100% no real debate same with Reddit...

A lot of the internet is like that. And that's what leads people (myself included sometimes) to have to type louder and louder with some kind of insults thrown in just so someone will pay attention rather than just wait for their turn to speak.

This is a good place. People have their opinions and will passionately defend them, but in the end, there's a legit mutual respect here that allows these conversations to be as productive as possible, or if there's an impasse, we can continue to behave like friends with a shared interest with no hard feelings. This is not common on the internet. It's definitely largely to do with this forum being relatively small, but it's also a testament to the quality of the average regular poster here.

As much as great information as exists within Reddit, 4chan, and other popular forums, the majority of the communities are generally toxic, which drives me away. I always feel the trolls get more respect than the intellectuals on many forums, leading to less intelligent conversation in general. That is one of the leading reasons I was a lurker here for a very long time before I became an active member - once I realized this community was different, I bought in. Now you're stuck with me. :p

This is indeed a special place in the interwebs, where as many unique personalities and perspectives come together with very little drama (wasn't always the way, I've heard, but we're beyond that now). Even though we all have differing opinions, we usually come to respect each other more for the discussion, or at least agree that walking away is better than beating our heads against the walls.

Seriously, the world could learn something from us. We should be proud of what we've got here.

You should go on the Hypixel server. Join Mega Walls and then you'll see Toxic. Or even worse UHC.

Toxicity on the internet is pretty much everywhere. It's a legit epidemic and is largely proportional to the size of the community and the amount of anonymity the site provides. 4chan is gigantic and completely anonymous, and that directly results in it being the single biggest cesspool on the internet, IMO. And after a time, the undesirables that can't play nice with others on the smaller sites end up there, boosting that effect even more. People will go where other people like themselves are. The opposite is true of more selective sites like neogaf, where the reverse happens (sadly to the detriment of the message they're trying to promote)

Pull it back to something like Reddit and you've still got some toxicity, but with the voting systems, people are somewhat invested enough in their profiles to remain some level of sane, but that voting system can artificially influence posts, especially as people start fishing for likes. So, then you have something like gamefaqs, which is smaller than reddit and 4chan, but is less civil than something like NeoGaf because some of these people have alt after alt to burn, retaining their relative anonymity.

Then, there are other small, specific sites. These take care of the anonymity aspect by being a more intimate environment. I was part of one that I had essentially taken over, lol, and I implemented a rating system for posts, and that had that same effect that I mentioned on Reddit, but worse. It simply made it easier to drive people out. This was a good thing at first in that it drove out some of the real trolls, but eventually it got too cliquey for new members to join unless they happened to fit the perfect desired profile. I believed in the system at first, but it eventually turned into just a way to bully people. I learned a valuable lesson there.

Now, I'm part of two sites primarily these days. This one, obviously, and a large, exclusive baseball related site that resembles the NeoGaf formula the most, only much more exclusive and much more of a hive mind. I stick with it because I've been a member for 8 years and it took me 6 years to even get in. And, it's still one of the best sources of information on the 'net for a lot of topics. There are also several prominent celebrities who are members, and it's kind of neat to interact with some of them like regular bros on the 'net.

This place is the ideal mix. It's a smaller community, there's no gimmicky system to keep people in line (hell, there doesn't even seem to be a specific rule stopping people from swearing, and people just tend to be respectful to others just by default), and there's good, intelligent people here that are drawn to it by a common subject matter that is particularly attractive to thoughtful people.

lt;dr (Just for you, NC :p) : This place is a rare combo. Respect it, and it will respect you back.

I've been pretty lucky in forums, so far, but I only use a few. The first I joined was quite a bit like this one, for the Dungeons & Dragons Online MMO. I can count the number of polarizing topics I've seen there since inception in 2006 on one hand:

1). PVE vs. PVP.
2). Court case between Turbine and Atari (Developer and Licensee for the rights for electronic D&D, respectively) after Atari vetoed a year's worth of content releases to kill the game so they could release their own with no competition. DDO is still here :D
3). Introduction of "Free to Play" and Micro-transactions. First system where purchases were with in-game currency and not needed to "Win the Game"

The Tech sites I follow are generally civil, the Amateur Radio ones in particular. The worst arguments are on the computer related sites, some of which are good natured (Apple II vs. Commodore, etc) with the worst being the more recent "Religious" discussions, like Apple vs. PC, Intel vs. AMD, Nvidia vs. ATI (now AMD), etc.

This is definitely a good place to be. I'm happy here. :D

[Edit] I didn't include discussions like Min/Max character stats, Tank vs. Heal vs. Magic vs. ? etc. Because they were all good natured and the worst cases settled in the PVP pits to prove points :D

A) If you think the company no longer developing a game bothers the modders at all, go ask the Morrowind guys, or the STALKER guys. Or the guys still working on the original Deus Ex.

B) I'm playing both 1.7.10 and later editions. I'm even intending to go back and play some 1.4.7 at some point. Old versions never die, they just become more difficult to access. I'm still enjoying a lot of 1.7.10.

I'm considering going back to 1.7.10. until I increase my laptop's RAM. My laptop's RAM is too small to run larger 1.10.2 packs. We all know that 1.10.2+ packs are memory hungry.
