Question Concerning RAM needs with FTB

Okay, so I'm not a hardcore gamer, I pretty much stick to FTB and Sims, though eventually I'll branch out, but I'm not looking to play anything too intensive. Anyway, I'm looking to get either a new laptop or a desktop PC because my current one is broken and it would cost too much to repair it. It's a i7, 16gb ram, Toshiba. Can't remember the exact model or anything. I'd prefer another laptop, but I'm going for the best specs for the best price. So, obviously 8gb ram is cheaper than 16gb, so I'm wondering if there's any benefits to having more, or if I can play FTB and other games with 8 just fine. Are there any modpacks I have to have more than 8 to play?

In today's environment I'd get nothing less than 16GB for gaming, as the GPU needs a LOT of memory and it usually uses some of the total system Ram. Hopefully you'll get the capability to add 16GB more... This could happen in 2 ways: You have 2 8GB parts now and replace wit 2 16GB -or- you have 1 16GB and can add a second one.

I know of no laptops with more than 2 ram slots, but I don't look until I need a new one. I bought 2 HP Envy x360s with Ryzen APU (Vega GPU built in) on sale ($500 ea.) with 8GB... In full GPU mode the graphics will use half the ram available. I could replace the 2 SoDIMMs with up to 16GB now but am holding out to see if a 32GB set will be supported in a new bios flash at some point.
