I've decided that i'm going to power my newest base with biofuel from an MFR bioreactor. For maximum efficiency I'm going to give it 9 different types of items to process. Conveniently, MFR farms can divide their plots into a 3x3 grid, and can grow different things in each square. This raises 2 questions; first, what should I plant in the 9 plots to get the highest number of items for the bioreactor(s) to process? Second, i'd like to ensure that the planter and bioreactor have no more than 1 stack of each item in their inventories at a time, to make sure that there's room for the 9 different types. How can I accomplish this?

Hm. I feel like Applied Energistics buses could do what you'd like but I haven't tested that.

Well, AE would be the most convenient, since then I just transfer the items instantaneously and directly into and from my AE network. However, AFAIK you can't use them to specify the number of items that should be in an inventory.

Have translocators? With a diamond nugget upgrade, translocators become "regulators" with 9 filter slots. With glowstone, they also move a stack at a time, so they're about as fast as you can get.

I would set up an ME interface (or two) stocking a stack each of the items you want to use, and two pairs of translocators transferring from them to the bioreactor.

Once you have a stock of each of the 9 items all you need is a precision (8) and a basic bus (1) hooked up to it and AE will keep it topped up, no fancy "keep this amount" things are needed.

Hmm, I just noticed a major problem; MFR planters don't work with forestry trees. This means there's only a limited number of tree types I can use? What else can I use, given that crops don't grow nearly as quickly?

EDIT: Fortunately the planters do work with natura trees. Problem averted.

Jungle, Spruce, Oak, MFR Rubber, Birch trees, potatoes, carrots, wheat seeds, pumpkin seeds that's 9.

Just vanilla, there's oak, birch, spruce and jungle trees (more?). If you are running Biomes O Plenty, their saplings works too, even more choices if you run Natura too.

Make the 4 corners and the center the trees of your choice. I would advise against sakura as it can grow into a redwood tree but ghost wood is equally fast. Potatoes, carrots, netherwart, and pumpkins all planted on IC2 crop sticks will yield the highest amount of material the fastest. It'll also give you a nice stock of wood.

As for keeping everything stocked; a reactor can only hold two stacks of a single item and after the initial extra stack it's the same as if there were only 1. For a planter I would suggest logistics pipes.

My setup is working amazingly, using vanilla, natura and BoP trees, but there's another problem; I can't drain the biofuel out of the bioreactor quick enough. How can I drain it more quickly?

Even cobble stone pipes have enough throughput to maintain one reactor. The bar of biofuel on the right is the internal creation of biofuel happening. The reactor produces only 1 bucket every 50 seconds.

The only way to have a faster output is more bioreactors, just like Hoff said, the chokepoint of production is built in.

Which plants for the planters depends on whether or not you use MFR Fertilizer.

If you do, mushrooms and Natura's cherry and ghostwood trees in the corners of a 9x9 Planter will give you LOTS of fuel sources. Using just one square of each and Fertilizer will give you more than you can use, especially the mushrooms.

Netherwart, carrots, potatoes, and a single jungle log with cocoa beans will work, with only two or three spots for each to grow. The last square can be whatever you want.
