In my opinion private packs should really be a little different. I don't see why the ftb team cannot request permission for all the current mods to be used in private packs as well, they would only have to request permission once and more likely than not the mod authors will be fine with it. If not then the creators of the private pack will need to inquire separately. All this means is that there would be a list of mods that can be used without additional permission, and any further mods that people want, will need permission. This way people can pick and choose the mods they love from the packs they love without unnecessary hassle. 90% of the people making private packs only want to customize the mods already available in ftb mod packs. To me this just seems to make sense. Although there still could be an unforeseeable reason for why this cannot happen, i'm more than willing to listen to the reasoning but for the moment this seems like a really great idea to me.

you cannot predict which people will apply for a private modpack and you cannot say what they will use it for.
some developers might be fine with having their mod be used by others, but other developers might be picky about who uses their mods for whatever purpose.
plus a private modpack is your responsibility, and not that from FTB. if FTB could give a private modpack to whoever wants one, they'd be drowning in work.

I didn't suggest that they do the work for everyone who applies, i simply suggested that they request permission for ftb users to use the mods in their pack, no matter the outcome it would be advantageous to try. The current situation isn't ideal and although it might not be a problem for big servers, its quite annoying for small private servers.

Besides, i don't see you coming up with any suggestions, or do you think the current system is fine?

Because several mod authors have said no? Because the ftb team wants a list of permissions from mod authors to you (as stated in some mods licenses?) Because if your serious about building and maintaining a modpack, you should do the work yourself?

Sorry, to me, you sound like a child who was told by one parent no, and are now asking the other for permission.

I think the current system is fine, otherwise we'd have everyone and their son going off and making modpacks just because they can.

The current system is fine. Nothing is stopping you from making your own mod pack, with or without permission, and it's probably a good idea to use one of the FTB packs/configs as a starting point. The sticking point is when you ask a 3rd party to distribute the pack for you. Password or no, putting it on the launcher exposes the FTB team to some liability regarding the licenses of the mods. Bottom line, if you want FTB to distribute your pack, you need to get the permission. Otherwise, it's fairly trivial (however legally sketchy) to distribute it yourself.
