I'm in the process of learning Buildcraft, and have created a pretty decent high output power station. My problem is it produces way too much power for my current needs.

At the moment I'm using some redstone power cells to store extra energy, but I'd like to figure out some sort of automated solution.

Is there a way to automatically shut something off when the power cell it is flowing to fills up? I would love to be able to have my station shut down when the batteries are full...and maybe start up when they start getting used up.

Just trying to figure out the best ways to go about implementing some inteligent power usage so things are using more power than they need and wasting fuel/etc. I looked around for a while but I can't really find much about it, if anyone knows of any really good guides about power storage/usage I would love to see them.

You can use buildcraft gates to detect the energy cell power state and then automatically shut down the engines when the cells are full.

Look at buildcraft gates attached to structure pipes next to your power cells with a redstone line or more structure pipes with red pipe wire running to your power station to turn it on/off. A simple BC gate has a power full, space for power and power empty condition you can trigger a pipe signal (with iron or higher gate) or a redstone signal (standard gate) with. You can also use a gate reader turtle and code them to output a redstone signal (or wireless signal even) to turn on/off power station when needed.

For large scale storage, make a big tank and use the spare MJ to feed magma crucibles turning netherrack into lava. When you want some power back, the magma engines turn lava back into MJ!
