I have been suffering horrible lag and thought that it was due to the Direwolf20 mods.
I have just found out that my laptop was crippled.
The Windows 8.1 update screwed over my Nvidia card and made it so that my laptop was only recognising the inbuilt intel card. Thus, I was not able to run FTB as well as it was needed.
I'm currently working to fix this issue and will update if everything works.
[UPDATE] Downloaded new Nvidia drivers, made sure everything uses the Nvidia card and it all works beautifully.
So let this be a note to anyone who has updated to Windows 8.1 - check to see if your graphics card is actually registering in your Device Manager
