I've been desperately needing wood in my FTB Unleashed (With Gregtech) world because GregTech makes it be used up quickly since the product of planks and sticks are halved. I've been wondering what the best way to get wood automatically is. I'm fairly poor on my server because I'm starting out. I have tons of iron and copper and silver and tin but only about 3 diamonds. I would make a Steve's Carts farm, but I want it to be able to run 24/7 with a way to turn it off if it were to overflow. Steve's Carts has breakable wood cutters besides the Galgadorian one and that is VERY expensive. I would use turtles, but I wouldn't be able to pick up and replant saplings with that as far as I know. If there is a way, please let me know!

As far as Greg's concerned only winners are allowed to automatically farm wood. People starting out do not have automatic anything.
So the cheapest method is probably going to be MFR or forestry depending on what recipe mode MFR is in. Steve's Carts has never really been too reliable with carts disappearing and they have nerfed aspects of the mod to hell.

You can use water or conveyor belts to collect saplings as they fall when you are using the turtle method. Then you can route the saplings back into the turtle.

You shouldn't be shapecrafting wood logs into planks when you can build a saw and get the normal amount of planks. MFR is your best bet for wood. An MFR only solution would have a large animal pen, feeding an upgraded sewer or sewers which would feed into a composter which would feed into a fertilizer which would increment growth on a sapling which would then be harvested by a harvester and the sapling replaced by a planter. Alternative multi-mod solutions include forgoing the planter and using stationary turtles to place carefully arranged saplings over a wide area handled by just a single upgrade harvester relying on numbers and area to overwhelm growth mechanics. Steve's carts can also be used as a mobile planter instead of turtles in conjunction with the harvester such that one does not need to use woodcutters at all much less repair them. I have not had success using steve's carts as a fertilizer, but again turtles are good for that if you want to put time into it. If not, relying on larger farms is the way to go.

Now, alternatively to all that if the problem is that you don't like that you'd need a saw to get 4 planks out of a log, this is completely configurable.

look in the "GregTech.cfg" file for this section:
general {
...

find this line:
B:WoodNeedsSawForCrafting=true

Change true to false. Once you do, you will get 5 planks out of one wood log when using a saw or 4 when shapecrafting just a log. You may also want to look into the DynamicConfig.cfg and enable storage block crafting/decrafting and disabling block smelting. This will allow you to enable fortune/auto smelt interaction in the TinkersWorkshop.txt without that exploit being present (although it will still warn of it).

Naturally if this isn't your server you'll have no control over these settings. But you could always relay them to the Admin as some server operators don't really delve into the configs before making a server live. It won't be necessary for users to touch their own configs unless the owner modifies block IDs.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
I've played a similar style- the easiest tree farm is a Tinkers lumber axe (I started with a bronze head with iron rod).
Plant oak saplings in rows of 2x(any length)- the trees with grow as a solid block of wood so the whole lot comes down at one.
(or anything that matches oak growth- like BoP cherry. Birch/spruce ect need space around them)
Yeah its manual- but it gave me more than enough for fuel and building supplies.

Once you're knocking down whole trees at a time- BoP magicwood and TC greatwood have fairly decent yields.
(Give me a few min- I'll dig out a pic of the finished tower)
