The question is about mods downloading other mods without asking or even telling the user - not about mods bypassing other mods' adf.ly links.

If you kept reading, I got to that.
I said:
As for whether it downloads it whether you want it or not, then again. Under conditions.

Understand that the user would be perfectly aware that Mod Y derives and relies on Mod X. If they want the mod then they should understand that Mod Y comes for it so they must download it. For them to complain that they are being forced to download Mod X for the sake of Mod Y.

Besides, of mod Y relies on a such a game-changing primary mod, and yet they enjoy it anyway, the primary mod mustn't be that bad in the first place.

I'd say never.

Just because of the bad things that can be done with this. Giving the user a note that some other mod would work great together with a mod and then putting in the url to the page is good. But not automaticly downloading.

The situation presented in the OP would be entirely unacceptable. In fact, I'm fairly sure downloading addition software without a user's consent is illegal, so it shouldn't be done anyway. Additionally, combinations of Minecraft mods can be an anti-paragon of stability when you know what's been added. If something gets added without the user knowing, fixing errors becomes much more difficult.

My two cents here. If you feel differently, that's cool.

I think it's convenient. I don't have to worry about having a wrong version of a mod. In most cases, they're mods I actually want to have in my world.

Id say never.
If a mod requires some other mod thats not present, it should stop with an error message.

Also - the whole notion of "its a well known mod, so its fine" Well known to WHO? something thats well known to the ftb community (TiC) is not well known to a newbie minecraft player.

It just takes 1 disgruntled mod developer to use this "download another mod" ability to install a virus or bot-net to put the whole community in a world of hurt and probably legal trouble as well.

NO auto-downloading of other mods.

Yes, if they alert me what mods it's trying to install with a brief description of what it does and a confirmation to download it through a secure connection to some sort of official mods server.
