Phantom in the nether?

so today i was roaming around the nether having found three fortresses, i was a few blocks away from my portal and started to hear weird noises… they got louder and louder until i then got picked and up started taking damage. This repeatedly happened until i died…. several times. The log said i was killed by a 'phantom'.

Whilst the attacks were taking place i frantically looked around and even changed my game mode to creative to have a look around to see if i could find out where the noises were coming from but no.

I have done a bit of research into what a phantom is and which mod it comes from but theres nothing! any information would be much appreciated

It's from Biomes o Plenty. Nasty things and they're practically invisible, but they seem pretty rare.

They drop ghostly essences, which I think you can use to summon ender dragons somehow

Are you playing in a pack with Ars Magica 2?
That sounds like a Hecatate, they prefer attacking a player from behind, and are able to go invisible for a few seconds after they track a target.
EDIT: OOps, didn't read the fact that the game thought it was a "phantom"

The best source I've found is actually the in-game manual the "Arcane Compendium"
You make it by putting a book in an item frame next to a source block of Liquid essence. You can find 2x2 pools of this just randomly generated around your world.

it's required to start the mod anyway, so might as well use it

Set particles to full and you will see it. Killed me also now when I go to the Nether I set particles to full so I can see the sneaky bastards

Some form of liquid would probably help too. After all, it's still a mob, it can't disobey physics like a real phantom might. It might give you the extra second or two needed to hit the guy a couple of times.

I carry a lightning staff made by thaumcraft 4 it tends to auto arc within a certain degree and i quite often when hearing the phantom noise will just shoot a blast in about 8 different directions to ID where he is.
Unfortunately this won't protect from multiple entities and must be used with care or you will set off pigmen.
From my limitted usage the bastard was killed by lightning indicated by essence drop yet somehow got underneath me and flung me about; so i don't know wether it spawns multiple entities or if it's ability is a gravity based cast attack.
Just rest assured not much survives a good lightning wand focused blast.

Or you could disarm and declare queensbury rules if your a believer in fUn in the dwarf fortress sense.

The few times i encountered them. I simply attacked below me with my sword. Few hits with a decent sword kills them before they kill you
