Tried that, and although I think I didn't get any major lag from sounds, it really screwed up keyboard + mouse interaction.

Click the mouse, keyboard presses are ignored. So mining or fighting on the move is impossible. Shift clicking on a barrel to get a few items results in shift being result, resulting in taking out a stack of items on the next click.
Plus random stuff at times, resulting in things being automatically moved to my hotbar.

Not sure which is the lesser of two evils :D
Would you mind sharing what the "sound thingy" is?

Ah, sweet, I'll try the slightly earlier version then. I think it did indeed help, but would need to give it more testing to confirm.

Hp pavilion g6
2.3ghz processors i5
64mb graphics
6gb ram
Optifine.
Running direwolf with all mods on
Have 32bit texture pack
Normal distance load
All particles on and "fancy" grass and trees.
Get 50fps on average.
Walking in open with trees - drops to around 30
Dense woods drop to 15

Add to and update :
Updated optifine to c2 ultra
Turned on multi-core setting
Now getting 70fps in average open plain village of 12 villagers.
Drops down to 50fps in my house (using xycraft blocks for floor and walls :p)
All settings are on fancy
Distance render still on normal
Not checked dense woods yet with new settings but if it can handle a floor of animated blocks, I'm sure it'll do better.)

You are not likely going to see any performance increase from an operating system upgrade. If you want to see a performance increase, install OptiFine, upgrade your graphics card, or at worst buy a new computer (be it Mac or Windows based, that is not important in regards to performance specifically).

Intel 2 Core @2.3 GHz
4 Gigs of Ram
250 HDD
Radeon HD 5450 (I think I have it a 650 MHz)
Windows 34-Bit

Pack:Lite(Removed mods I don't want, CC,Miscper.....Added Optifine)

Settings:Fast Graphics, Normal Render Distance, all that custom texture stuff Optifine comes with off.

FPS
Minimum:15
Average: 25-30

I know my PC sucks, but I expected better performance. Any tips for better performance would be nice.
Also, When I installed steam, my Framerate was cut in half for some reason, so I uninstalled it.

With the TwilightForest mod in, my computer would get 4 fps if I was lucky. And that is when it would actually load my world.

I believe that is the entire reason everyone is continuing the trend. Or we have a LOT of stupid users, which is entirely possible.
Indeed. gotta hammer it in. besides it's one of those "funny" misspellings.

I also found that disabling your AnitVirus while playing SSP and opening to LAN improves over all performance. Steam also kills your FPS. I also updated Java today and saw a 15-20% performance boost. Just thought this will help out some people.

Anti virus and steam. yeah. they are not the only ones that kill fps in minecraft.
Skype does it too. not when using it to talk, but whenever you play fullscreen and it tries to notify you of a new message. really annoying, you don't need it kill it tho, setting your status to "Do not disturb" fixes it.

I think any and all apps that tries to grab the screen whenever you are playing minecraft will cause such spikes.
