Hello fellow minecrafters.

After playing the standard FTB mod packs for a long time I'm interested in putting my own pack together (just for SSP)
I'm thinking on using multi mc as a core and then only using mods that the universal configs cover.

Do you have any tips on what to do, other than of ourse downloading the mods ;)

What do you use for your own packs. And lastly. Where do I put the universal configs and handle ID conflicts

Much noobiness I know, but we all must start somewhere

No need for multi mc, forge has made it so easy to install mods that it is only drag and drop. Start with a general idea of the theme you are interest in and build up from there.

Look for new mods in the mc forums and if you want a challenge hold up on the ones you already know. Don't worry too much about the ID conflicts, you will have a dump file telling you the ones you have and the ranges that are free.

Add one mod at a time, it will be easier to troubleshoot everything. About configs, the biggest changes you'll have to do are related to the ore generation, disabling same ores from different mods, other than that it's just to get them to your liking, but most mods can be used out of the box.

Edit: spelling and grammar.

While MMC isn't needed, it's very very handy, especially if you plan on setting up multiple instances.

Other than that, yeah. Start with a general concept; start small. Don't just add mods because you think they're fun, make sure they tie into the pack you're designing.

Spend time working with the configs; sure, you don't have to worry much with the ID conflicts, but that doesn't mean they're configured to how you want your pack to feel. Take the time to look though the different configs to see what you can (and can't) change.

Consider looking at MineTweaker to change recipes if there's a recipe conflict, or if you want to make it harder to make certain things.

Finally, play test it. You'll find things you want to tweak in the configs, mods you feel don't need to be there, or even a hole that needs to be filled by some other mod.

Rather short, to the point list. And I see you have Chisel on your list, nice :)

Having a short list of mods you really enjoy is better than having a massive list that lags you. Chisel is an amazing mod for aesthetic options. If you like the mod, I'd recommend adding Carpenter's Blocks as well, as it expands upon your options.

I actually thought alot about carpenters blocks, tried adding it to Dw20, but was unable to load the world.
Do you know if there is problems with adding it to an existing world?

Nice to see another people who enjoys Advanced Genetics. Seems you have a mix of high tech and cool magic. I couldn't live with so few TC4 addons personally, but you do have AM2, so good on you.

For TC4? Forbidden Magic is awesome, not just for all the nether content, but it has cross-mod compatibility in the form of wands that allow you to generate Vis from a variety of new sources. Mega awesome bonus points due to a Witchwood Wand core that allows you to generate Vis from your AM2 Mana Reserves(without the special caps it's 200 Mana per vis IIRC).

A very worthwhile one is Thaumic History, which adds a TON of old thamcraft content(well, okay, some, but more is being added every update), and Thaumic Exploration adds back some old favorites as well.

A less well known addon(or so I think) is Thaumic Warden, which, like many TC4 addons, wants to add back Warded Blocks. While that might not be in it for a while, it's still very good for a mod by someone who seems to be new at mod making. It has researchable items, one is a suit of armor that protects like diamond, has a 20% vis discount, allows you to see node info, and looks awesome as all hell. One is a sword, another is a bow, and the last one is a sort of transmutation item that I haven't tried out yet. Has a unique aspect for its research, and a flower that can be farmed for shards needed to make the stuff.

There are other mods with TC tie-ins, but those are my main picks.

Maybe theres is room for one more tip (who knows more might come in the future)
I am currently debating about BoP with myself.
My first thoughts is no, since i have been experiencing quite alot of lag due to it in DW20 pack.

With a pack list much shorter, do you know if it is going to impact the system alot? and/or do you know of methods to decrease the strain

You can give Highlands a try. I can't really comment on system impact with data, but I can say that I'm using it on a very (very) humble server and it works ok.
