Oil fires are annoying. Thank god you can make mystcraft ages with desert oil fields biomes.

Still, could be worse. Imagine if you'd been pumping a mystcraft oil ocean. Fire = bye bye server.

Actually done this. The server did not like it in the slightest... Oil ocean + Instability is not pretty. We had to use rejuvenation missiles to get rid of all the fire, and turn off fire spread .

I'd thought that as well, but the server was struggling with the fires - not sure if it was because of fire spread or not, but we put them out anyway.

The fires are actually pretty easy to put out. Start at one end and place a cobblestone block above the oil block thats on fire. Then either fly or sneak your way backwards sticking more cobblestone until you have a layer of cobblestone over the oil blocks. No more fire. Then just remove the cobblestone again if you prefer the look of your oilfield. :)

We had a huge oilfire on our server and it was causing lag on some the clients when going near it so 2 of us spent 10 minutes and cleaned it up.

I just turned off oil fires in the config files. I like the idea that the oil burns but I had a few fires close to bases that were chunkloaded and it was causing lots of issues.

I once had an idea to use oil to get rid of Natura redwood tree. I put one block on the top, wait for it to spread and put it on fire. While it was loaded the game run ok, but when I left the area I couldn't come back without crash. MCEdit was necessary to clean it up.
