I recommend Direwolf 20's spotlights, they are very, very good!
I've been playing FTB for around over 3/4 months now, and I still don't know all the mods!
It's a big world in FTB, don't expect to learn it all in a day.

Also, thaumcraft, chisel, geostrata and buildcraft will come in handy ALOT!
Blood Magic is a very powerful magic mod once you learn how to use it correctly. Thaumcraft is another one, and combined with Thaumic Tinkerer, it can be extremely useful. Mekanism and Thermal Expansion are two good tech mods for ore processing, power gen, and power storage, as well as some other things that I'm probably forgetting.
