1. Watch FTB tutorial, see something you like, research it.
2. Do it yourself, see what you have to do in order to get the stuff you need. Energy, materials, automation, etc.
3. You should be able to begin learning yourself/researching yourself, how to use the rest of the mods after you finish your first few projects.
FTB is a cluster fuck of a billion different things. It is also a sandbox game, which means anything and everything is possible within the realm of the game mechanics and your imagination. This lack of direction makes it tedious to start off learning.
Thus, the basics is what you will learn yourself, by trying to simulate a project you see in an tutorial/Let's Play.

1. Yes, NEI (Not Enough Items) is purpose built for this, when you look in to your inventory it will be on the right. If you are using the FTB pack on the launcher it WILL be installed by default. If that mentioned window is not showing up press O and it should appear/ disappear.
2. Yes and No, depends on the company you keep and the servers regulars. You can get a mix of helpful responses to questions or you could get people that berate you and tell you to use Google (which people should do). Starting out on a server can't hurt though.
3. Yes, servers can if open long enough be rather devoid of resource, however an admin that knows what they are doing will set up a mining world with a plugin and or Mystcraft to supplement resources. TBH it's just like Vanilla in regards to that, but mods can exacerbate that problem for EG Mekanism Digi Miner and Quarries in general. If you find a new or freshly reset server this wont be an issue and very few servers/ worlds last long enough for that to occur.
One thing to note is that you must get used to your creations not being permanent, your creations longevity is purely up to the discretion of the server admin/ world breaking bugs.

a) For SSP, just cheat in the stuff for a mystcraft world. Pages are tedious and annoying to get.
b) Mek is not in any official FTB packs, so unless he's using TPPI...
c) What is he using without a server version?
I would like to say the mek thing was giving an example. He never said anything about mek in FTB

1) watch a "Let's Play" series on youtube that covers modded minecraft. Direwolf20 is a good choice Look for his Let's Play Season 6 series..he teaches the basics of several of the mods.
2) Watch mod spotlights on some of the major mods. (Buildcraft, Applied Energistics, logistics pipes, Tinker's Construct, Thaumcraft, Thermal Expansion, Forestry are good starts). There are many great youtubers who do mod spotlights, DW20 being one of them. Another one of my faves is Bevo.
3) Check out the FTB wiki

Hey all,
I'm pretty new to mine craft and mods in general and I had a few questions I was hoping someone could answer.
First off I have played just vanilla minecrat for a few days to get the hang of it all but I really didn't like the fact that there was no mini map or map in general and the armor/weapons were kind of weak so I set out to find some mods.
Then I found this site and thought ok I'll start out with FTB Monster mod pack. But Now I'm kind of lost and confused. I spent some times checking out all the mods in the pack and the webb site for them to see what they were and how to use them but now I'm even more confused. I know I would like to set up a quarry with the lazar drill thing . I know I would like to make a power suit so I don't die to lava and mobs as much
So my question(s) about FTB Monster are...
#1 Is there a way in game to see how to make everything and see the recipe for all the mods? I know there is some built in GUI or something but I can not quite figure it out. Like how do I see the map? I have a mini map but what key opens the big map and what are its features? Is there some in game guide in game for all this? If not is there some guide out of game for all this?
#2 Would I be better off doing all this on a server. I saw many great looking servers that I could play on but I'm not sure. They seem to be more focused on pvp and towns and such. I just want to make a base and get some OP armor and weapons and set up some cool quarry's and such. I just want to adventure and survive
Would single player or a server be better for me??
#3 last question I swear. Dose the world regenerate itself? Like If I was to join a server then wouldn't all the minerals be pretty mined out or dose the world regen over time? How about on single player dose it regen there? I know mobs keep coming back from some mob spawned thing but yea.
Well that's about it . Like I said I really love the look and feel of minecraft and I would just like to try and enjoy this great looking mod pack and maybe other mod packs like Blood and Bones or whatever
Thanks for all the help guys. I found a nice tutorial on utube and watched and followed along. I was able to make a smeltery and start with thinker construct. Also messing around with growing with the magical seeds mod. I can grow diamonds
After I learned the NEI its pretty easy to get into each mod. I did it all on survival and didn't use creative. I like a challenge . I'm now starting to make armor and good weapons with that and then I plan to get into more complex mods in this pack.

A. I tend to avoid it anyway SSP and SMP alike, I don't know why but I find the premise of the mod boring. Call me weird but no matter the combo of pages every world looks the same to me, same old blocks in worlds with nothing really new. While I find them handy dense ore and tendril worlds don't excite me.
B. I listed it as an example of an effective autominer that could cause a total ore elimination, quarries where mentioned right after.
C. Not sure what you mean here.
