Usually when exploring a new nether, I always get a fortress a few 100 blocks from spawn.

This time, I have literally gone 1000's of blocks in every direction, and not a single fortress came to be. After 2 hours in the nether I felt more like I was playing Diablo than Minecraft.

Is the spawn rate of fortresses reduced in 1.7, or am I just unlucky?

I don't like "cheating" when I'm playing, but at this rate I'm going to have to reset the Nether and hope for a better worldgen - cos this is plain frustrating.

Maybe you missed a fortress because it was buried in the ground.
Did you also go in diagonal directions?

It's a very "lakey" map, so no real diagonals to explore.

It's huge lava lakes after huge lava lake criss crossed by tendrils of land to "explore".

I guess I just got a bad seed.

I always enable cheats in my worlds. I play in survival mode, but this way I always have the option to type "/gamemode 1" and switch to creative mode so I can fly around and explore faster. When I'm done I just type "/gamemode 0" and go back to playing normally.

Of course, this can potentially ruin some of the "fun" of Minecrafting, so perhaps this solution isn't for everybody. It's kinda like a Pandora's Box - once you open it and "cheat" a little using creative mode, it's difficult to stay on the straight and narrow. :)

If you didn't enable cheats in your world, you can always "Open to LAN" (or whatever it's called) which will allow you to go into creative mode. Or, if you have your seed, you can start a new world (a copy), explore and find your fortress, note the coordinates and then go back to your original world and walk right to it.

It's also good to ask, does the pack you are playing have a mod that disables nether fortresses, such as Ex Nihilo?

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Resetting the nether won't work unless you use a different seed.

If you have a legitimate way to obtain flight, then its a lot easier to track them down [try not to get too lost, Nether all looks the same]
I don't know of any 1.7.10 mods that'll provide an in-game method of tracking fortresses.
Just keep at it; it'll make finding that elusive fort oh so much sweeter.

(I've had this quite a few times, its resulted in a few epic builds to connect said fort into my base)

There's always AMIDST.

It's a standalone program where you can pump in your seed and get a map of your world. You can display various features: jungle temples, desert temples, witch huts, villages, slime chunks and nether fortresses.

(There is a possibility that the items shown are false positives though, due to the way it works).

Especially if the pack being played has BoP or any other mod that alters nether biomes

The bane of my life.. LOL I wish there was an AMIDST that would factor in BoP, pulling from your BoP config files to generate a "map"

Well to be honest. People who use BoP in general sicken me, but BoP in the nether *pukes*
I am very anti-BoP (for a few reasons) but BoP screws the nether so badly. The nether is not meant to be pretty, and BoP tries to do that. It is hell! I would like to see the souls of the damned and stuff like this

not "nether gardens" and bee hives...
the bones are cool... but that's about it

I will agree to disagree with you on that.
I find the BoP additions to the Nether enhancing. I see the Nether Gardens as a sad reminder of the overworld, being consumed and burned in the hell that is the Nether.
Bee hives? Well, okay you got me on that one, a cool block, and a fat flying morph, but /shrug.

Also hell... There are versions of hell that aren't all fire and brimstone.
This one's made of ice.

Nuh it's just DW20 with a couple of extra mods thrown in - nothing that tinkers with fortresses.

Well "sicken" me is a bit of a harsh word .. but "vanilla" gen is a bit too bare and bland for my likings.

I'm currently using ATG for worldgen, and let BoP in on the mix, which adds quite some nice ambiance I even like what it adds in the Nether. As someone said, it does remind you of a devastated overworld taken over by some hellish thingy.

What I do hate with a passion in the nether, is the endless fields of smoldering grass that BoP inserts. They're just annoying to navigate, and there's way too much of them.

Does BoP change the positions of the fortresses?

As far as I understood, AMIDST shows you where the features (temples, fortresses etc) *would* be if other factors don't rule them out. For example, a location for villages will be generated by the seed, but if it happens to be too close to a river, it won't actually get generated.

I assume it does. Why? Try this:
Take a vanilla seed that spawns you next to a feature (e.g. Temple)
Now use that same seed on a world with a biome mod.

Nether fortresses sorta work the same.

It could be ATG, I'd check its configs. But I don't know why it would be.

BoP can change the locations of fortresses due to the fact that it adds in multiple (depending on configs) biomes that move other biomes around.
At least that's my experience.
