So, a little back story. A friend started a white-list server 17 days ago, with 24 players. In the first day I branch mined diamonds, built a quarry, geo-gen and started my operations. By the end of the first week, I'd quarried four 64x64 areas to bedrock, had me a work place setup running off advanced solar panels, etc. After my friend complained about the gigantic holes(can't blame him, lol), I took my operation else where: Myst craft ages. I got to work on leather + paper for books. After jumping through ~40 worlds I got the "crystals" symbol (more on this in a moment). After a little research a wrote my first age:
Biome Controller: Single Biome
Biomes: Plains
Lighting: Normal Lighting
Sky: Normal Sky Color
Terrain Features: Crystals
Terrain Generation: Normal Terrain
Time: Eternal Day
Weather: No Weather
World Modifier: None

My plan was simple: run quarries off of solar power while collecting leather for books. So I started with a single quarry using: 2x advanced solar panels for each of 4 electric engines + various piping for power, sorting, and storage. By the time the first quarry finished, I had learned a few pitfalls of my first quarry, and set about changing them. The first being my chest holding ores would get too full and I'd lose items while not baby sitting it. The second was having to move between the worlds to get my goodies. I'd setup crystal portals on both sides but it still seemed too time consuming.

The first thing I did was setup track(LOADS of track) for where I'd place my next quarries(dot dot dot). This track would haul ores out of my myst craft world straight into a sorter/ore processor. Then I made QUITE a few advanced solar panels(64 to be exact) and 8 quarries. I set the quarries up in my usual 64x64 fashion and let them run. After a few derps everything ran SMOOTH.

While those ran, I created a massive coal->diamond processor in my quarry age(Creates a diamond about every 7 seconds) and directed coal, flint and obsidian to their relative positions in the processor.

I now sit on 12 stacks of diamonds...

I've told you my story to say I think with the other 'industrialization' mods, that mystcraft is a bit of an overkill in this mod pack. In under 2 weeks, I require very few ore-type resources(Iridum)...

A true story of the American dream, started with nothing then 17 days later you have 12 stacks of diamonds. I like it :)

Any plans for your newly acquired wealth?

Not sure yet. Might start placing diamond blocks randomly throughout the world (LOL, not really)

To be honest, I think Im going to make a gigantic factory for the community. My plan is if it requires more than 3-4 steps to make, my factory will have a room for it, if the player has the resources.

IE: coal->diamonds, Advanced solar panels, etc.

Good idea, I always like the idea of a shared machine room, creates a real sense of community.

You know what you need? More quarries!

Or, make a world eating redpower tunnel bore, and cover it with Diamond Covers.

To be honest I don't see this as a Mystcraft issue. You could get the same amount of resources in your normal world. I personally set up the quarries underground so that you don't tear big holes in the landscape and it nets me the same amount of resources without the complexity of transporting them to the Overworld.

About the only two things that a Mystcraft world helps with is that the bedrock/surface can be flat and that you can have eternal day. (Although solars still arn't as good as windmills. Dunno about advanced solars though.)

I always use a tunnel bore, though. That way I can customize the height, and don't have to deal with the extra stone/dirt from the surface.

Also, why plains? I always use either beach (it's relatively low), or mushroom island (no mobs).

I like plains too. Get some extra wool/leather and stuff while your quarry tears a hole into the world.

I also sometimes set up my quarry right over a village. Just for the heck of it. Guess I'm a bit of a sadist :)

I like the plains for the Cows, Chickens, Sheep. Remeber, when I setup my age, It was about a week in, so lifestock was in short supply(or rather, the goods from them such as leather & feathers which are essential for mist crafting), and the flowers for dyes.

Advanced solar panels are better. 1EU/tick @ night, 8EU/tick @ day + 32,000 EU storage

I tried putting it over a village, the folks just kept moving down to the next level as the quarry passed.... It made me sad :/

Now, you need to upgrade your solars, 32EU and 8 at night is really good, and you should be able to make them after all the resources you got, right?

Ferrous into platinum using a grinder, surely you'd get enough with this included? You only need like 6 iridium ore or something to make it with the alternative data flow circuit recipe if my memory serves me correct

This server is a FTB Beta server. No Ferrous->Platinum, meaning no alt data flow circuit recipe. :/

Aaah, no sheldonite in the end either.

Make a nether portal. Spotting iridium in the nether is incredibly easy and I think the chunks are smaller. I know in a few trips I found 20-30 iridium that way in beta pack. Make sure to use silk touch! Jetpack recommended.

Yea, might end up making a quarry in the nether somewhere (LOL)

don't worry, mystcraft is getting a new research system soon that will make it harder to get new symbols.

Or arguably easier, as won't involve generating 40 odd ages to get the Crystal symbol as poor SReject had to.

from what I heard, a way to get pages that contain the symbols will be by trading with villagers, and they weren't that cheap
