What is the most compact/efficient set up for a single apiary? And can there be more added to the set up?

I currently have a wooden pipe pulling out and piping up over the top to a chest in front.

Is there a way to do it all underground with one pipe?

Wooden pipe from side into golden pipe down, into apiarist pipe (under apiary) down to a gold pipe to storage. Set apiary pipe, right click like a diamond pipe and set to white "any bee" black to anything. Then take the bottom of apiary pipe to storage (black).

So that would still be a 2x1 space. Is it at all possible to go 1x1 or not? I can't manage to get it working but maybe someone else knows how? Would items routers work in a grid of them? Also I am familiar with a apiary pipe thanks for the tip on it :p

Thing is the apiarist pipe is pretty much the only way to closest automate bee hives, otherwise you hit all sorts of issues.

this but use an iron pipe instead of the gold one between the wooden+gate and apiarist pipe. that way, you can put them all next to each other in a line

Even better, use alternating stone/cobblestone pipes. they won't connect to each other.
