I posted a thread for ideas to make a harcore server a few weeks ago. A few friends and I did managed to do just that. But now that we have started, we are realizing that we may have made things too hard maybe. I was hoping someone who has tangled with GregTech's hard mode before could give me some pointers for my team. Specifically:

With GT, stone is very hard and mining it takes a long time. With Custom Ore Gen, ores only spawn in certain places and are alot rarer. Add Hunger Overhaul and Iguana Tweaks and health regen is incredibly slow, as is growing crops and breeding animals. Basicly combining these, we are finding ores very very hard to find and caves tough to explore. Plus with GT the ores we need are deep in mountaints it seems. We're just wondering if there's any mods that add mining techniques/tools that might help without being OP here. Someone suggested using explosives for getting through all the new tougher stone. Obviously old techniques of using stone picks to tunnel through a mountain isn't going to work here so maybe dynamite IS the way to go. But is there a mod that adds any good mining explosives ?

Or...maybe some other mining tool/technique we haven't thought of ? Or maybe some GT vets could give us some tips or something ??? With the encumberance added by Iguana Tweaks, even when we DO find some ore, we're going to need to make trips with mules to get them back to camp and eventually build some rail systems for transporting the ores. I actually really like that though, its realistic and adds a real use for minecarts...

Also, finding ores with custom ore gen and GT together feels almost impossible, 3 of us like the camouflaged ore, the other 2 want it turned off, so we're considering adding Greg's Prospecting to our pack to help out. Anyone know of any other mods like that, which aren't too OP but do help find ore to a certain extent ?

And last but not least, when we get all this ore back to the base, what should we do with it ? Is it worth smashing Tethradrite (s?) and Cassiterite (s?) ore and then smelting it to make nuggets ? Whats the FIRST bronze machine we should make ? Thanks for the help gang !

Does your pack have the grind stone? I forget what mod it hails from, but its usually my first order of business.

Edit: Its from Applied Energistics I believe. If you have that mod, and you haven't tweaked it out, its a good early-game pulverizer. Requires patience and tedium is all :p

First bronze machine should be either the grinder or the smelter(the one that does alloys). The smelter allows for more efficient production of bronze. And Mekanism adds an atomic disassembler, and is also mostly untouched by Greg.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
IC2 has industrial tnt- which doesn't kill ore drops.
I like the idea of mining with explosives (its a LOT of fun, with more fun piled on top)
-plenty of explosive mod out theres--should be some kind of mining charge somewhere.

Cassiterite doesn't have a byproduct as it contains double tin, probably worth smashing if you desire.
- wheres Tetrahedrite has a useful byproduct; so whack it in the grinder.

Steam smelter makes bronze in a 4:4 (lossless) ratio.
Sturdy grinder outputs 1 dust, and half a byproduct chance.
Forge hammer removes tool material loss from crafting plates.
Steam smelter can save a bit of fuel.
Bronze BF needed for steel.
Squeezing extractor needed to make rubber.

It might be worth setting up in the caves, and process down in the caves (given the metal and power requirements for making rails)- ship up the the base later.

iTnT doesnt get far with HarderStone, so I usually do caving. Honestly, farming first then caving the living shit out of an area works best. I would rush the Miner and Advanced Miners as well. I am going to assume you disabled both enchanting and the Grind stone, so you should make every GT bronze machine. People try to skip progression and get hurt. It pays to bide your time in the Bronze age and pile up resources before moving on.

Thanks guys. All your tips have helped. Playing this way is definitely a new challenge, but its also like a whole new game, we are really enjoying it so far. I wasn't aware you can prospect with Hammers, so that is helping. Donkeys and wooden rails are pretty useful now, which is one thing we were wanting, making things we used to never give a crap about more useful. Having cloud style ore dis, harder stone and limited (very) carry weight (especially for ores) has really given us some more realistic mines. Do Bronze Jackhammers break regular stone any quicker ?

Do you guys have Thaumcraft?
If so, Thaumcraft makes for a GREAT early-game mod in Gregtech hardcore mode. Especially notable is the arcane bore, which is FAR easier to acquire then a miner, though it is slower. (Especially with harder stone, as its speed is determined by the hardness of the block it's mining)

By the way, mind if I join?

Bronze jackhammers do, but I reccomend just saving up for the steel and diamond ones... bronze isnt much of an upgrade.

Um, yes it is.
Bronze jackhammer is the earliest electric tool available, and mines as quickly as an iron pickaxe (Or something around there, definitely faster then flint/stone). It saves you a HUGE amount of iron/steel that you would have to spend on pickaxes to get an equivalent mining speed.

Not the mention the fact that steel jackhammer and drills require Stainless Steel now, while Diamond Jackhammers require Tungstensteel...

Well the server is private, its just my 3 of my friends, one of whom runs it off her computer. If it weren't for that Im sure she'd let others join. BUT that being said, we intend to start a real server in the near future. We plan to rent one from a pro site and have the same mods/play style. Be warned though, it is real hardcore and very different from other minecraft. Once we get the real server I will post the info here. It will be whitelist but as long as you're not a psycho you can join...[DOUBLEPOST=1396127746][/DOUBLEPOST]Yeah the bronze jackhammer is very easy to acquire compared to the others. With the Gregtech Config option for harder stone, I think it will be almost a necessity if it is really faster than flint picks

I have fond memories of a modpack I've made before, where health took a day to regen, Hunger Overhaul made growing crops an exercise in endurance and patience, charcoal could only be made in a coke oven and torch recipes only yielded a single torch...

Oh, and everything took four times longer to mine. EVERYTHING.

I wish I could code, i wanted to uuse gregtechs coal/charcoal dusts to be what drops from ores or what you get from cooking logs so that you had to put them together to actually get coal/char making it more expensive/harder to get...
