Poking through the monster config - which is mostly the master config - I noticed:

Thermal Expansion is dropping mob heads with a 5% rate. This could be argued to unbalance thaumcraft as mob heads are a unique source of some aspects that are otherwise hard to get.

FlatBedrock is also on which I find disconcerting, and again it effects the utility of mods that have a *horizontal* bedrock breaker.

All vanilla generation is disabled and replaced with CofhCore based generation, but the parameters mimic exactly vanilla, so is this done for performance reasons?

Next up, the default config *completely* changes the way Railcraft's Saltpeter and Sulfur ores spawn. Now the @#$% is everywhere underground - I rather liked going to some desert to find saltpeter, and given the ore block is sandstone based it looks bloody stupid underground anyway.

Then there is the case of GeoStrata. Its stone generation seems to be disabled in config. Its stone variants don't mine "properly" with mining tools from other mods, the IC2 mining drill being most irritating (a stone pickaxe mines most of them faster!) and most of the GeoStrata variants overlap with other sources of limestone, marble & basalt that are enabled. But Im finding the #@#$ everywhere. Is it meant to be generating or is it a bug? I havn't disabled geostrata outright, based on the pretty lamps one can make from the crystals.

It is worth pointing out that COFHCore is *cruical* to ore generation in Monster as railcraft, factorization and IC2 generation is disabled (fair enough) in their own mods.

There still is a reason to go to deserts for saltpeter; it respawns if it has a certain amount of sand around it.

From railcraft.cfg

Code:
    generate {
        B:abyssal=true
        B:firestone=true
        B:quarried=true
        B:saltpeter=false
        B:sulfur=false
    }

so, no. :/

Are you looking at a cfg value to get your 5%, or are you basing this off of perceived drop rate in gameplay? I noticed that way too many mob heads dropped in my monster 103 server, but I haven't seen a single one drop with my 105 server.

Has anyone else had trouble finding Firestone? I have heard its under lava in the nether, but natura coated the underside of lava lakes with tainted soil. I'm curious if its interfering with the ore spawn, I'm looking in the wrong place, or its just really rare.

As soon as I needed some, I went into the Nether and found some within 5 minutes of travel. This was running Magic World 2, not sure about the other mods, but MW2 has Natura.

If you're talking about rotarycraft's bedrock breaker, it can also be used vertically. Flat bedrock 4 thick actually buffs this device by making far more bedrock available.

One thing that I noticed is the config for flat bedrock also gimps gascraft's fracking which uses special gas pocket bedrock blocks. That are suppose to be mixed in with the normal bedrock and I've yet to see any so far with the current configs. In addition I looked at the gascraft config and it has a option for flatbedrock support that is off by default it appears. Luckily there are the rare gas pockets in normal stone which appear to be enabled.

I had to go through and edit it all, the saltpeter and sulfur generating where there not supposed to... it drove me nuts, I couldn't take it. I finally got it all to working normal generation from each of the mods after around 4 hours of trying to figure out what mod was changing it, then figuring out how to disable it >_<. It was problematic as each time I made a edit I had to save the config, delete the map file and create a new one. Took forever but I am happy I finally got it!

I thought sunstone ore was from ars magica 2. I think firestone is a new rail craft ore that's a special heat source, useful in boilers for one but not sure on other uuses.

No, monsters configs are very different than vanilla.
Apparently, Reika broke that config on purpose.

Oops, I'll fix that.

Hrm, not a part of the configs I handled. I'll change that.

Thank you! So nice of you to do that. Can't wait for a new build to come out! Any idea where I can find changelogs btw?

That's because I set it up that way. Changelogs are no longer done on the forums. I gave @VikeStep a better means to do his stuff.
Ah, I am apparently blind, I have looked at the forum several times this week and did not see the top post that says that. Huzza for reading!

hmmm, I assumed bedrock breakers would only work horizontally to avoid punching holes in the world.

At any rate, Monster (and the Master) config have a lot of mods with settings that are different to vanilla, and its difficult to know how intentional this is.

i.e. Is the GeoStrata rock generation intentional in Monster? i.e. if Reika "fixes" his code to actually honor the "generateRock" setting then Monster worlds would stop generating rock as its off in the config. So, is the rock meant to be there? And if so, is there a fix incoming to make it mineable with - at least - IC2s mining tools, but I guess TiC, TC etc might all have problems if the mining drills do.

Geostrata rocks are laaaaaaaaame. I'd disable them soon, but I don't want to lose chunks of my world... it'd create some nasty pockets of air where monsters can just spawn. The crystals are coolio tho.

The coolio crystals are really the *only* reason I haven't disabled the mod entirely.
Reika's "reported" attitude is beginning to concern me.

"Apparently, Reika broke that config on purpose." (from this thread)
"Reika PURPOSELY coded them to ignore MFFS forcefields." (from Thank you MeteorCraft for...")

I don't like having someone else impose their idea of 'the one true way MC should be played' on my play - it reminds me to much of what irks me with buildcraft and IC2 right now.
