Because Eclipse's readme just told me,
If eclipse is launched from the Finder/dock on MacOS X using the 64-bit Oracle JVM, it cannot be used to edit files and folders with non-ASCII file names. The workaround is to edit the file /etc/launchd.conf and add the following line:

setenv LANG en_CA.UTF-8

and then restart your Mac.

Keybounce's Macbook Pro
' turns into a three character UTF-8 sequence -- which I didn't find until I booted into the recover disk, and looked from there.

But if we help, then we drive the number to bigger and bigger negative numbers, and since you are driving it in the same direction, we no longer lose count.
