So I created a small underground room in the Monster modpack and populated it with villagers. To protect them, I made it brightly lit; added regen, water breathing, and resistance crystals; created an iron golem; and placed a Magnum torch above the room. Previously, I had noticed heavily increased zombie spawning above the room on the surface, but after the torch there were no mobs anywhere close to my area at any time.

This morning I opened up the world to find that half of them had vanished at some point. The only thing I've done recently is open my first Mystcraft age.

Does anyone know what could cause devastation like this? Can a siege ignore a magnum torch? This is all a little bit disheartening: they were all hand-picked with the golden lasso from all over the place.

You say it was underground, but was it a "village" or more of a "Prison"? Villagers hate being underground and won't accept such a location for a village, but if you use cages correctly they can't go anywhere anyway.

Do you have any sludge boilers or nuclear reactors nearby by chance? Those might have poisoned them to death. Also more likely, slime spawned and gobbled them up. Those ignore light levels and may have wandered in from beyond the range of the magnum torches perhaps. Wait, do those aggro on villagers? Only thing I can think of offhand. Btw nice avatar laughing man.

If there's too many creatures in an area some of them are pushed into the walls. Which leads to suffocation if the walls are two blocks high, or the pushed creatures being bushed out entirely if the walls are one block thick.

You see this in most animal pens if all the animals gather in one corner. It's a Vanilla bug, and is why I always use a double wall of fences.

One possible reason.

Another common issue with animal pens is chunk boundries. If they constantly seem to be escaping, chances are your pen passes a chunk boundary. Animals do crazy things near those if they try to pathfind.

Your villagers could have also managed to push their comrades through the walls of they were 1 block thick like penned animals do on occasion. I have also had villagers get stuck and suffocate in walls and doorways when trapped in normal houses.
