As long as the mods use UUIDs rather than names it should be fine. I'm still kinda worried to lose items or access to stuff when changing though.

If you are logging on using Mojang's authentication (most recent versions do), then most likely. If you have an older stand-alone version then probably not.

That may be a balls up if anyone decides to fire up an older version. I dunno when mod authors would've started adding in the changes.
