Minecraft running out of memory (for most modpacks)

Hello, I am having issues playing Minecraft modpacks through the Curseforge. Every time I try opening a modpack (with the exception of feed the beast light) it crashes halfway through loading the mods. I have 8gb of ram, which I think is plenty. I have tried allocating 2,3,4,5,6 and 7 GB or ram in the launcher and strangely 3 GB gets me the furthest in the loading process. I have installed java 64 bit. I am not sure what to do next. Please help, thank you
