Microsoft, Minecraft and AI research?

I just saw this and thought it of interest... Microsoft is apparently using Minecraft for real world AI research. The announcement is that they have decided to Open Source it, along with the AIX platform it runs on (this is a Java mod, apparently, not IBM's version od Unix). The article claims that the AI agents can be programmed using any language, as well.

I don't know how much use it'll be to this community, but it's interesting none the less.

Interesting to learn that they are not using their C++ version for this, instead preferring the Java version. I would have thought they'd be using a modified version of the C++ version, or in house API. Also, this was linked in the article, but posting it anyways so people read it too. Very interesting read.

This is a better link... Straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. I can understand using the Java version because the MCPE environment isn't widely known yet, except for maybe the Raspberry Pi version, so it's easier to mod and add the AI agent code to.

The Infoworld link states that the AI agent can be programmed using multiple languages but I didn't see that mentioned here. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
