I use lots of 1k storage cells, all pre formatted because they can hold 8128 for a single item type. If I have more than 8128 it will either end up in my trash can or in the recycler.

do you guys who use "one drive per item" play SSP or SMP?

Both of them. SMP tends to have a smaller number of barrels in use than SSP for me, which is the only difference in my AE networks.

Frankly, just filling up drives with 1K storage cells, and then relying on storage buses on barrels and DSUs for bulk items like cobble is probably the easiest and cheapest way to do it.

In general, all of the major metals and basic resources should get a DSU, plus anything you'll make infinitely like treefarm products and other crops. Maybe 20 DSUs total if you go nuts. From there junk 4ks seem to be best.

Somewhere over the rainbow.
The main problem that will stay with the ME system is the ultra stupid limit of 63 item types on each cell, no matter how much you make, they will never ever accept more than 63 type of thing, makes it a pain to run any kind of mob spawner cause you'll get so many armors/swords/bows that it will fill up your ME drives quicker than ever because theses items don't stack so they take 1 type each, no matter how big your cell is, the maximum it can hold is 63 different items...

Actually, as long as they have the same damage value, things that won't stack in your inventory still count as a single type & will only take up 1 slot on a drive. all bows w/50% durability will count as 1 type, 25% a 2nd type. Repair everything to full durability & problem solved. Use a fuzzy export bus & you can dump items based on damage values or regardless of damage values. You can set up a system to automatically recycle bows w/<50% durability, combine 50 - 99% & only store 100%.

I already dump them with a fuzzy export bus into a trash can (actually that trashcan got a fuzzy export bus on each side since there's so much useless stuff especially when you have Mekanism, a lot of useless armors that you can't uncraft or smelt to get the ressources back), the downside of it is if I knew a way to automatically repair the bows and keep them in a DSU, it would be much more easier, but so far the ME system doesn't want to repair them when I use the crafting terminal and since they have different damage value you can't automate the repairing without having a dozen of stations to repair them...

I don't use any DSUs, mostly because I prefer to try to find a use for as much stuff as possible. Instead of excess cobble being stored in a DSU, it gets dumped into recyclers. Ingots get used to build the various things in my bases/projects, and anything that starts piling up eventually gets assigned an ultimate use, even if it's just the recyclers. I really only allow a few exceptions, my "resource sink" items like UU-matter, biofuel, or certain machines like ultimate hybrid solars. Not that I disagree with other folks going the "hoarder" route - it's just that my particular plays type is more centered on using "all the parts of the animal," figuratively speaking.

I only have 3 64k drives. I use one for all the geostrata stones because that many extra barrels was annoying. I have one for stone/dirt/sand/gravel from my quarry. The 3rd one holds netherack, nether brick, and tainted soil from a nether quarry, as well as 2 wood types from auto farms. Everything else is on 4k-16k drives. I keep adjusting the system as it fills. I format drives once I have a good bit of inventory and use the IO port to fill them and replace the unformated ones little by little.[DOUBLEPOST=1392966328][/DOUBLEPOST]

Not that I am trying to hoard stuff, just can't use it as fast as it comes in and I hate throwing stuff away cus I might need it.

While DSUs are great, I cant legitmize using them as freely. I have TE recipes enabled instead of vanilla. Balances my modpack better IMO though.

Yeah, so do I. It's 8 Enderium for 4 DSUs, which if you have a decent way of getting pearls (hint: you really should) isn't actually that bad.

My current issue isnt the pearls but the blaze powder. I have to automate killing blazes which I never really liked doing for some reason. Maybe it was all the work I did in vanilla to make a good mob grinder? Is there a better way that I dont know about? I'm on my first legit week on the server so I dont have a lot of options in front of me right now. Havent even started on bees yet.

There's a recipe for the powder, one glowstone dust + 2 molten redstone in a fluid transposer. So you only need actual blazes for stuff that requires the rods.

I'm even more hurting for redstone right now. Mostly due to TiC and TE being my starting goals. Those gobble it up and ask for more.

Plan your setup right. Send the items to a buffer and continue to dis-enchanter to remove the enchants. The items of same type and be sent to auto-anvil to repair. Then everything is same damagetype and will stack

I have about 50 DSU's... i'm still using Logistics pipes.

In my 'manufactory', I am up to 200 auto crafting tables and counting, so far have managed to automate everything. I am now building a big 'assembly room' to keep a minimum number of various chipsets and so forth.

I'm a huge fan of the DSU's but the comments here have me worried about lag, my pipe network is very busy as I have a large network of MFR farms around my base feeding in supplies combined with a mana bean farm etc etc.

Is the natural progression to move from DSU's to AE?
