I just went back to the nether, to check my lava pump, as i witnessed the following:

All around my lava pump there were like 100 wisps and a few witches . What is the cause of this?

I have no clue what causes it... same thing happens in our Mystcraft age that is used for quarries. Wisps everywhere.

The flux level is moderate (i didn't do any magic in the nether), but the vis is at 0/249. Still no idea what's the problem.

the problem isn't that the flux is high. I think there is always some flux in the nether. dunno if that is intended or not, just noticed that there is. the issue is that since flux leads to a chance to spawn a wisp, and that these are chunks that are kept loaded constantly, the wisps are allowed to keep spawning and spawning. wisps seem to not quite follow the vanilla spawn/despawn rules. that is the tend to persist for a really long time at the least. Thus leading to the pictured situation with wisps just about anywhere in the always loaded nether pump facility.

The more interesting question (after having found an explanation for the wisps) is.. where do all those witches come from? oO Are they attracted by flux, too?

Do you have a nether portal near there? Wisps could spawn from the Overworld hit the Nether portal and then get stuck in the Nether. Over time the build up to the level that you see. I had a similar thing happen with bats since my portal was underground and counted as a cave so had bats spawn there.

That seems to be the explanation for the wisps.

That would interest me as well.

Yes, but that could not explain the enormous amount of wisps.

I've had witches spawn next to those overworld thaumcraft dungeons with the zombie and skelly spawner in them. there are dark nodes in those, so I guess they do spawn in high flux areas too.

atho i have to admit to ever only seeing a single one at a time. and even then it was a very rare occurrence.

Actually yes it can. As soon as a wisp enters the nether portal it is sent to the Nether and if the chunk is unloaded the entity is saved there and unloaded. The node then noticing it doesn't have a wisp will spawn another wisp. Once it wanders in it is sent to the Nether. Rinse and repeat. Eventually when you go to the Nether you see all of the saved wisps.

I had a Nether portal in a cave and had bats spawn in the cave all the time. They then flew into the portal and were sent to the Nether. After several Minecraft days I went to the Nether for more netherbrick and when I loaded at my portal I had a ton of bats flying around much like your screenshot with the Wisps.

Remember that I think in 1.4 of Minecraft they added the ability to send mobs over portals. You can use this trick to load up mob entities to an unloaded chunk and save them for later use. I think Mystcraft portals follow similar rules.
