In Options tab, what is the slider for memory (RAM) set at?

It should be at least 2gb, preferably around 4gb IF your system can take it (you have 8gb or more RAM, which you do)

It was 1 1/2 and i just changed it to 4...lets see.

So now I get this crash as I am loading into the server I was whitelisted on:

Are you sure you have correct version installed in the client?

Yes. FTB IE 1.7 v(2.3.5) MC v 1.7.10

Connection times out, and there are others on it.
