My laptop is about 4 years old now, it's a Xeon X3350 2.66GHz Processor, 4GB RAM, Windows 7 32-bit, can't remember exactly what graphics card it has but it's whatever came after the NVidia 260M; it originally had an 8800M but that got replaced due to a fault.

It runs FTB with about 20FPS in my world, which has a lot of RedPower microblocks, pneumatic tubes, Buildcraft pipes, steam boilers, industrial steam engines, apiaries, and tond of other stuff.

It does have sporadic performance problems where it will take 20 minutes to load Minecraft and then will start off really slow (1 frame per 10 seconds) when first loggin in, but that hasn't happened for a few weeks now.

I want to replace it. What kind of laptop should I get for FTB? Any personal experiences?

Saw your thread had no posts so I'd thought I'd give you a bump.
I'm in a similar boat, looking for a new laptop. Honestly, just trying to figure what's necessary to run FTB at a decent frame rate. Having a 2500K + 570 GTX still chokes at times, so I'm really not sure what to expect.

What is important is the cpu, and fast memory
My experiences are that even the worst graphic card will do ok, but your processor is important and memory speed.
If you were to make a server, an ssd would be worth considering

You still however need to consider a half decent graphics card as going for the cheapest option won't serve you well, unfortunately I don't have experience with laptops as I use a desktop. It is important to consider balancing fast memory with decent processor and graphics card. Also look for a decent HDD.

To be fair, If a laptop is a must for you and you need to run FTB without lag. You are looking at getting one of the high-end and quite expensive ones.

Not necessarily.

I've got a Toshiba Satellite S855-01K (~$750 + tax), and it runs FT Unleashed on full graphics at ~45FPS. I tend to kick it down to normal and get 60 with Vsync, though.

You have to find a laptop with a decent processor and discrete graphics, though, which can take some hunting.

Not really. Personally, I own HP dv6-6b66ew laptop. It costed me about 1k $ which is not a large amount of money for a laptop. The most important, it has an i7 processor and 8 gigabytes of ram and along with pretty good HD6770M graphic card, it provides 35-40 FPS on Far rendering. Considering it is one year old, you should get something equivalent for the same amount of money, depending on which country you live in.

The amount of usable RAM is also a huge factor. FTB Unleashed is not a small mod-pack and will consume most of the 3GB of RAM available to a Windows 7 32-bit system. If limited to Windows, definitely install 64-bit. Alternatively, install Ubuntu and boot to Ubuntu when you want to place FTB. You should get all of your RAM then.

One of the best ways to get FTB to run on laptops is to install optifine. Playing around with the options with that mod (that Mojang should steal.. I mean... ummm implement) makes Unleashed run with no problems for me.

*Note* when you first pop into a world there is "some" lag due to the chunks loading, but it gets much smoother quite quickly.

Good luck and happy beast feeding!

There is problems with optifine and mods like graphic glitches. I am getting a Asus g750 and I will never recommend you a ALIENWARE.

NV GF 640M actually runs FTB pretty good. I'm pretty content with a Dell Vostro.

My laptop is very old. i may say even 9 years of age. to be correct, and to be quite honest i think it is fine and can do well. idk the specs but it is worse than yours and also will probably break down in about another 9. I think that you should get a laptop. but if laptops are your thing than you should go with a asus.

OK, this is whata I got:
https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/vortexIV-Elite/
Chassis & Display
Vortex Series: 17.3" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-4800MQ (2.70GHz) 6MB
Memory (RAM)
16GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card
2 x NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 780M - 4.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
Memory - 1st Hard Disk
1TB SEAGATE HYBRID GEN3 SSHD Drive, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (5400 rpm)
2nd Hard Disk
1TB SEAGATE HYBRID GEN3 SSHD Drive, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (5400 rpm)
1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
6x BLURAY ROM, 8x DVD ±R/±RW & CYBERLINK SOFTWARE
Sound Card
Intel 5.1 Channel High Definition Audio + SPDIF/MIC/Headphone Jack
Wireless/Wired Networking
GIGABIT LAN & KILLER™ 1202 WIRELESS GAMING 802.11N + BLUETOOTH 4.0
Battery
Vortex Elite 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (5,800 mAh/89.21WH)
Operating System
Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit w/SP1 - inc DVD & Licence

It scores 7.9 (which is the highest possible score) for graphics on the Windows Experience Index, and nearly as high for CPU and RAM. Only the disk performance lets it down.

I didn't get it just to run MineCraft though! I'm going to be alpha-testing a new game soon and it will need 64-bit windows and some serious graphics power to run.

maybe. if you van. make your parents collaborate together for a present to afford your computer. I understand people don't just have money laying around to buy a computer by themselves.
